1 CIP4-Prepress-grayboxes training
March 31, 2017 Welcome Druckvorstufe und Gray Boxes Koen Van de Poel Chairman Origination&Prepress CIP4 JDF Agfa Hello, I am Koen Van de Poel, chairman of the CIP4 Origination and Prepress workgroup. Since CIP4 doesn't pay chairman and I have a lot of children, I also have another paid job at Agfa. I am not a English native speaker, a lot of prepress vendors are located in Flanders in Belgium and we tried to make Dutch the common language in our work group but it didn't work. Koen Van de Poel, Agfa

March 31, 2017 Today’s Agenda Auftragserstellung Notwendige Informationen aus Sicht Druckvorstufe Gray Boxes Stripping Verarbeitung (Ausschiessen, Überfüllen, CMS, Rendern) Ausgabe: Proof, Platten, Farbzonen-voreinstellungen This training will provide both a short explanation how prepress works and where JDF can be used. <Click> After an introduction about the creation of job tickets and functions of prepress, we will discuss the <Click> inputs to prepress, <Click> how gray boxes can help <Click> use of Stripping process to create imposition what <Click> processing is done like imposition, trapping, color management and RIPing <Click> what the outputs are like proofs, plates, ink key settings and how prepress connects to the press This presentation was mainly towards what we call 'Conventional prepress‘ but it is partially valid for digital printing too. Koen Van de Poel, Agfa

March 31, 2017 Positionierung Kunden Let's have a look where prepress is situated in the complete workflow. <Click> Prepress is usually located at the printers side and is the step between <Click> the content creation which is often at the Customers or Agency side and the <Click> Press or digital printer at the printer's side. Prepress covers thus the functions that are needed to mark the original content documents onto a physical media that is used by a press or digital printer. For a conventional press, this involves creating the plates (or intermediate films). For a digital printer, this marking will go directly to paper. Drucksachen- Hersteller Koen Van de Poel, Agfa

The prepress controller gets the complete prepress part and is responsible for controlling the sub systems. These can be devices, like Trapping or even sub controllers like ImageSetting. The communication with the hardware devices is handled by ImageSetting in this case. Controller SW Device Proofer A CtP B HW Device Koen Van de Poel, Agfa

March 31, 2017 Auftragserstellung Before moving to the prepress introduction I want to explain to you how a JDF job ticket for prepress is created since this was not fully covered yet in previous sessions. Koen Van de Poel, Agfa

6 Produkteinformationen
CIP4-Prepress-grayboxes training March 31, 2017 Produkteinformationen Verfügbare Informationen im MIS Administrative Daten (Kunde, Auftragsnr.) Produktestruktur (product parts) und Bogenaufteilung Ausschiessinformationen, Anz. Seiten Farbigkeit pro Druckseite Prozesse: Gray Boxes The following information is usually available when the MIS creates or upgrades the production ticket: <Click> administrative customer information like the name and address of company, customer contact etc. administrative job info like customer order number and MIS order number, IDs for job and job parts <Click> the structure of the job components (see coming slide on Parts) Organization of the sheets into signatures etc. <Click> Imposition information like how many pages go on one sheet and the total number of pages <Click> how many colors for each sheet side <Click> which processes are needed to create this job, this is simplified now using gray boxes Koen Van de Poel, Agfa

7 Fehlende Informationen
However, some prepress information is still missing at creation time since the content files are often needed to fill this <Click> and they will arrive later. Also MIS does not have knowledge about the contents. For simplicity reasons, we will use PDF in this presentation as representative content file but other Page Description Languages or even bitmaps are possible. JDF is neutral towards the format of the content. <Click> The exact names of the spot colors are extracted (or verified) against the separations inside the PDF file and <Click> the match between the number pages in the content versus these in the definition is made. When differences are detected that have an influence on cost, either the content is adapted or the extra cost should be approved and prepress should inform MIS to update the job ticket. March 31, 2017 Druckvorstufe Before going into more details on the JDF processes, I would like to give a short introduction on how prepress works. Koen Van de Poel, Agfa

9 Schritte in der Vorstufe
CIP4-Prepress-grayboxes training March 31, 2017 Schritte in der Vorstufe Seitenerstellung (Elemente/Layout/Kreativ) Seitenaufbereitung (Einzelseite) Vorbereitung der Inhaltsdateien PDF-Erstellung und -Prüfung, Vorbereitung Ausschiessen Seitenreihenfolge bestimmen Druckbogenaufbereitung Rendern Überfüllen, Separation, Sonderfarben, Rastern Vorabkontrolle per Proof Plattenausgabe und PPF-Datei-Erstellung <Click> The work step to create the content is covered by the Content Creation presentation Looking at the prepress as a whole, we can divide it into two big parts: <Click> Prepress preparation which has the function to prepare content files so that they are ready for RIPing. This includes obtaining the content files through whatever channel and also <Click> preparing the imposition of the pages on the sheets. The second part is <Click> Production prepress which has the responsibility to create the plates. <Click> This includes RIPing, which is the process of going from a page description language like PDF or PostScript to a bitmap with individual pixels, <Click> creating proofs and <Click> finally the plates and information for ink key settings on the press. March 31, 2017 Workflow PrePressPreparation Gray box ImpositionPreparation Gray box Plate Making Gray box If we look into the details of a real prepress workflow system, we see a part that <Click> handles the Prepress preparation, a part for the <Click> Imposition preparation and finally the <Click> plate making. The exact order of the process may vary from job to job or from system to system. Koen Van de Poel, Agfa

March 31, 2017 Prepress Preparation Ziel: Überprüfung der eingehenden Daten auf problemlose Verarbeitbarkeit Verarbeitungsschritte Dateneingang (Asset Transfer) Konvertierung in Digitale Masterdatei (PDF) Überfüllung creating production quality standard formats ??? Preflight / automatische Korrekturen Einzelseitenproof / Freigabe We will take a closer look at the prepress preparation part first. The goal of all this, is to make sure that the second part: Prepress Production can run as quickly as possible without errors and with as little interactions as possible. The first step is <Click> to obtain the content files. These can arrive on a physical media like a CD or by electronic transmission. These are called Asset Transfers in JDF. <Click> The content files are sometimes still in a native format (like Adobe Illustrator or InDesign), and need an extra conversion step then to move to a more standard format like PostScript, PDF or TIFF. <Click> Setting Trapping parameters is needed to avoid gaps caused by press misregistrations and <Click> Finally, after some fixes, we obtain a production quality standard format. For this we needed also the help of <Click> Preflighting to detect errors and fix the files and <Click> Page proofs and approvals to make sure the content, layout and colors are correct. 14 Produkteteile (Product parts)
CIP4-Prepress-grayboxes training March 31, 2017 Produkteteile (Product parts) Produkt Broschüre Prepress Umschlag Inhalt Prepress s/w CMYK Prozess 16 Seiten 2x 8 Seiten This is a sample product node structure. This example is a bit more complex than a simple brochure. <Click> It has a cover and <Click> body part. The body has a <Click> black\&white and <Click> color elements and the color element has two sheets, one with 16pp and another with two times 8 pages. This describes how the final product will be produced. The rectangles at the left indicate which nodes are <Click> product nodes and which are <Click> process nodes. A product node is defined by the customer and has intents. The process nodes are created by the MIS system. <Click> As you see there is an overlapping area. In some cases, the customer is in charge and intents are available for this decision on color while in other cases he doesn't care (or knows) and the printer needs to specify it. Distinction between color and black & white pages is one example. One of the discussion points in prepress is at which level the prepress gray boxes should be attached. We will discuss gray boxes later. In some cases, it sounds better to provide one prepress node for the whole brochure <Click> and use partitioning for the different parts, in other cases <Click> the cover and body are treated separately. March 31, 2017 Gray Boxes Einfache Art für das MIS, der Druckvorstufe mitzuteilen, wie der Auftrag verarbeitet wird. PrePressPreparation, ImpositionPrepreparation PlateMaking, xxProofing Informationsumfang Eingabe: verfügbare Auftragsinformationen, in unterschiedlichem Detailgrad Ausgabe: Detaillierte Informationen (Bogenaufbau, Platten, Produktionskomponenten) Druckvorstufen Anwender ergänzen fehlende Informationen (alternativ Standard-Werte oder Analyse) A gray box is a new concept introduced in JDF 1.2. In the past prepress folks were focusing on low-level details like trapping width and screening details. Long discussions were started and pages and pages were added to the spec but at the end we found out that no program were producing these. We went back to the drawing board and decided to build a new high-level interface that allows to leave out the information details that are unknown. <Click> These boxes work like large building blocks, allowing an MIS system to define what a prepress system should do. Gray boxes have names like PrePressPreparation, ImpositionPreparation, PlateMaking and Proofing <Click> MIS provides as much information as it can for the input parameters but need to supply output related information so that prepress knows what to make. <Click> The prepress operator will fill in the missing details or the system will use defaults for that. Seiten Auszüge Material Stripping This is an example of how to describe a prepress workflow with gray boxes. <Click> PrePressPreparation can start when it knows the number of pages and will produce a runlist to refers to the Content pages. <Click> ImpositionPreparation can start from Stripping parameters if this high-level imposition info is available from MIS or the operator can select a template file. The output is a layout and mark files. <Click> PlateMaking will take responsibility of creating the plates and previews based on the output of the previous gray boxes. Koen Van de Poel, Agfa

March 31, 2017 Stripping Vollumfängliche Ausschiess-Informationen aus MIS zur Wiederverwendung im Workflow Verhindert das “mehrfache Ausschiessen”: Kalkulation Produktionsplanung Druckvorstufe Bidirektionale Kommunikation möglich: Druckvorstufe meldet veränderte Ausschiessinformationen an MIS zurück A recent JDF process is Stripping. <Click> Stripping is a way to describe imposition layout at a high level that matches the information that is available in advanced MIS systems. <Click> Currently imposition is often redone 3 times: <Click> once in the estimating system, <Click> once in the production planning system and <Click> again in prepress. If all these systems become Stripping enabled, it will happen only once. <Click> it also allows for a communication in opposite direction: if the prepress system would modify imposition, it can update the ticket in the MIS system to do recalculations. Each BinderySignature represents a folding dummy. There are various ways to describe this folding information. <Click> Each BinderySignature contains pages or cells. <Click> In this simple sample, a FoldCatalog is used to describe the folding. From this FoldCatalog and some other parameters, prepress can derive the page numbering. The RelativeBox Position defines the location on the sheet of the BinderySignatures. <Click> This is the position of the first box in relative sheet coordinates (with the reference point in the lower left) <Click> This is the second box Koen Van de Poel, Agfa
