Jiddisch und Chanukkah

Each side of the dreidel bears a letter of the Hebrew alphabet: נ (Nun), ג (Gimel), ה (Hey), ש (Shin). They stand for “נס גדול היה שם” (Nes Gadol Hayah Sham), meaning “a great miracle happened there”. The letters were originally a mnemonic for the rules of a gambling game played with a dreidel: Nun = Yiddish nisht, nito (“nothing”) Hey = halb (“half”) Gimel = gants (“all”) Shin = shtel ayn (“put in”)

Each player begins with 10-15 game pieces: chocolate gelt, pennies, or raisins. At the beginning of each round, everyone puts one game piece into the center pot, then again after every turn. Each player spins the dreidel once during their turn. Depending on which letter is facing up when it stops spinning, they give or take game pieces from the pot: If נ (nun), nisht, nito (player does nothing). If ג (gimel), gants (gets everything whole pot). If ה (he), halb (player gets half of the pot). If ש (shin), shtel ayn (player puts in a piece to the pot). If the player is out of pieces, they are either “out” or may ask another player for a “loan”.
