2 I. There are 2 ways to form questions in German…
Either…invert the word order & start with the verb…. Kennst du Marta? Bist du neu hier? Or start with a question word… Wo wohnt Marta? Woher kommst du? We will start with the first one… inverting the word order.

3 II. Forming a Question w/o Question Words:
It’s easier than in English!! English uses a form of the phrase “to do” when making questions (Do you learn German?, does he play guitar?, etc.) German does not—you just skip right to the verb: Lernst du Deutsch? Spielst du Gitarre? Machst du Hausaufgaben?

When there is no Question word, you MUST use the inverted word order z.B  Statement: Du kommst spät -You come late. Question: Kommst du spät? -Are you coming late? Wohnt Herr Riebe in Hamburg? -Does Mr. Riebe live in Hamburg? Ist Jürgen zu Hause? –Is Jürgen home? Kennst du Tina? –Do you know Tina? Notice the verb is blue, and the subjects are in red

A. Practice turning these statements into questions—start with the verb. Follow the model. z.B. Dirk wohnt um die Ecke. Wohnt Dirk um die Ecke? 1. Lola arbeitet in Mathe. 2. Marko ist nett. 3. Wie? -How? Or What? Wie spät ist es? –How late is it? What time is it? Wie heißt du? –What’s your name? Wie geht’s? –How are you?/How’s it going? Wer? -Who? Wer ist das? –Who is that? Wie viel? -How much? Wie viel ist drei plus vier? –How much is three plus four? Wie viele? –How many? Wie viele Personen gibt es in deiner Familie? Woher? –From where? Woher kommst du?  Ich komme aus… Wo? –Where? asks for location of something/someone Wo wohnst du?  Ich wohne um die Ecke. Wohin? –Where to? –asks for directions, from one place to another Wohin gehst du? –Where are you going (to)? Wann? When? – Wann gehst du zum Kaufhaus? Was? What? – Was machst du? What are you doing? - Was ist das? –What is that?
