This PE/playground game also covers the following Key Language: Numbers (or any other vocabulary you wish to practise) General classroom instructions You will find below: How to play the game (in English) – slide 3 A list of Key Language required, with sound files – slides 4 to 7 Instructions needed to set up and play the game with your pupils, with sound files – slides 8 & 9 N.B. : when setting up a game, remember you can always use the instruction «So!» (Like this) to demonstrate what you are doing, rather than a long explanation.

3 Das Taschentuch-Spiel – How to play the game
Organise pupils in 2 teams of equal numbers, facing each other in 2 lines A Taschentuch or any item or other object is put in the middle The teacher gives a number in German to each team member (the same numbers from 1 to …. are given to each team)* All pupils line up (randomly, i.e, not in the order of the given numbers). Each line has equal distance from the Taschentuch (at least 2 metres) The teacher gives a signal: Achtung, fertig!, and then calls out a number The corresponding numbers on each team rush to try and grab the Taschentuch They have to put one arm behind their back and grab with one hand only The fastest child to grab it and get back to his/her place wins a point for their team Both players go back to their place The teacher then calls out another number. Continue until all numbers have been called *Instead of given numbers, you could use colours/animals/letters of the alphabet….

Und nun Klasse, ein Spiel! Hört genau zu! Schaut her! Stellt euch in zwei Reihen gegenüber auf! Das Taschentuch ist in der Mitte. Fertig! Die Zahl ist eins. (1) Der Erste, der das Taschentuch nimmt, gewinnt einen Punkt für das Team. And now class, a game! Listen carefully! (group of children) Watch! (group of children) Make 2 lines facing each other! The hanky is in the middle. Ready! (group of children) The number is one. The first to take the hanky wins a point for the team.
