Across the top are the different modules of the Scorecard development environment. The development environment is fully integrated with SharePoint Portal Server and Windows SharePoint Services and offers a single interface to develop all of the components of your scorecard. Scorecard Development Environment: Scorecard Builder – The Scorecard Builder offers the UI for defining your scorecards. What KPIs are included in a scorecard? What are the KPI definitions? How are the KPIs grouped? What are the different perspectives and objectives of your scorecard? All of these definitions are made through the Scorecard Builder. Definitions for standard scorecard elements can also be re-used to enforce definition consistency from scorecard to scorecard. The Scorecard Builder supports scorecards following the Balanced Scorecard methodology or other methodologies. Strategy Map Builder – The Strategy Map Builder allows you to create a visual representation of your strategy or scorecard. Items created in the Strategy Map Builder are carried through to the Scorecard Builder and vice versa so you don’t need to duplicate the definition effort. Those following the Balanced Scorecard methodology can define their strategy and scorecards directly in the Strategy Map Builder. When they are ready to map and track their strategy, their Strategy Map definitions form the basis for their scorecards without any additional work. Strategy Maps are built using the Visio Active X control, offering Visio’s flexible and full visualization capabilities. Data Sources – The Data Sources module is where users map their scorecard definitions to the Analysis Services cubes which provide the KPI data. The target (goal) information for each KPI is also defined in this module. Target information can be stored in the same Analysis Services cube as the actual data but can also be stored by the solution outside of the KPI cube. The Data Sources module also provides tools that allow users to define how to roll up the performance of individual KPIs to the objectives, perspectives or groups to show an summary or aggregation of the key performance indicators. Data Entry – The Data Entry module provides an interface for entering target data if it does not reside in the KPI cube. Targets may be defined as actual values, or can be MDX formulas against the KPI cubes. Scorecard Engine: The Scorecard Engine manages all of the definitions, documents, and other meta data generated in the process of defining scorecards, storing the definitions in the Scorecard Database. The Engine also understands the mappings of your scorecards to their data sources and understands how to retrieve and present this information through the scorecard web parts in the presentation layer of the solution. Scorecard Presentation: Final presentation of the scorecards is accomplished through a set of web parts. The web parts offer a variety of views into your scorecards from single KPI views to full scorecard views. These web parts are customizable and can leverage dimensions in your data cubes so users can interactively slice and dice with the same scorecard if it is appropriate. For example, all of our sales districts may have the same scorecard structure but each district has its own sales numbers and goals. A single scorecard view can be set up to show sales for different districts and also to allow a corporate manager to see sales across the entire organization and drill down to the region level if desired. Source Systems and Scorecard Cubes: Actuals data (sales, financial data, etc.) in source systems and Analysis Services cubes are vital to the solution. The Analysis Services cubes, however, must be built outside of the scorecard solution. Once users have defined their scorecards and KPIs, these definitions can feed the cube building process. This part of the solution can be a partner or consulting offering on top of the solution.
