Prior to vSphere 5.1, both vMotion and Storage vMotion required shared storage to perform live migrations of virtual machines. (vMotion required shared storage between hosts performing the vMotion. Storage vMotion required a host to have access to the source and destination datastores.) vSphere 5.1 removes the shared storage requirement. vSphere 5.1 enables a virtual machine to change its datastore and host simultaneously, even if the two hosts don't have any shared storage in common. It allows virtual machine migration between clusters in a larger datacenter, which may not have a common set of datastores between them but also allows virtual machine migration in small environments without access to expensive shared storage equipment. vSphere 5.1 allows combining vMotion and storage vMotion into one process. This combined migration copies both the virtual machine memory and its disk over the network to the destination host. After all the memory and disk data are send over, the destination virtual machine will resume and the source virtual machine will be powered off.

For application-level failures, vSphere has two methods of protecting applications. First, vSphere does support HA with Microsoft Cluster Services (MSCS). Second, there are a set of App-aware APIs that can be used in conjunction with a 3rd party tool like Symantec HA that will detect application failures and restart those VMs. For applications that are absolutely critical and cannot tolerate even a few minutes of downtime, VMware offers Fault Tolerance for zero downtime recovery of a failed VM. Microsoft has nothing similar and relies on expensive 3rd party solutions for this type of critical app. Finally, a common administrative task is addressing an app that suddenly becomes resource constrained. Well, VMware supports hot-add of both vCPU, vRAM, and hot-add and extend of virtual disks. With Hyper-V, there is no way to dynamically scale an application up (no hot-add vCPU, no hot-extend virtual disk) when demands increase. You’d have to shut down the VM, apply the additional resources, and restart the VM. This deck also does not cover VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) which is a complete disaster recovery planning/testing/solution tool for virtualized environments. It does this by creating resource pools, datastores and portgroups. Many of you are familiar with all the magic you have experienced in your datacenters using vSphere. Click 2: vCloud Director really then starts to pool these virtual infrastructure resources into tiered multi-tenant resources called Provider virtual datacenters. These vDCs have SLAs and cost associate with them that are indicated by Gold, Silver and Bronze. This is the base of your cloud infrastructure Click 3: Organizations and users are managed in vCloud Director and users are provided a web-based portal to access cloud resources. Policies can be set to control usage. Click 4: Embedded vShield technologies make the shared cloud environment multi-tenant and secure Click 5: Organization virtual datacenters are used to allocate resources to organizations from these shared vDCs and powerful controls allow IT to dictate how organizations consume resources in the cloud. Click 6: Content is provided through catalogs which when combined with policy and self-service access enable a cloud environment. The abstraction provides the elasticity needed to decouple the production of the infrastructure from the consumption of the infrastructure. Since consumers now consume from these logical constructs known as vDCs, they can now be serviced by a private cloud, a public cloud or even a hybrid cloud in a transparent manner. Its main use case is helping customers onboard to public cloud providers by moving VMs/templates from their private cloud. We built vCloud Connector for “Cloud Onboarding” instead of using SRM because this use case requires a more light weight product with minimal orchestration capabilities.
