7 Typische Storage Array Architektur
Traditioneller Storage An diesem Punkt wird bei herkömlichen Speicher-lösungen der Controller zum Flaschenhals und muß zur Erweiterung der Kapazität und der Performance teuer ersetzt werden. This is a traditional storage model. The vendor sells you a controller that connects to your network and serves storage to your servers. In this model, you add capacity by adding more JBOD to your Monolithic SAN. This however creates a performance bottleneck at the controller. This is not good.

9 Besser durch Design: SAN/iQ Architektur
Skalierbare Storage Nodes LeftHand’s Unterschiede: Echter Storage Cluster Echte Virtualisierung des Speichers Vereinfachung des Managements Skaliert nach Performance und Kapazität Hochverfügbar durch “Network RAID” Multi-site SAN In contrast, LeftHand has taken a different approach When the company was founded, the company focused on the N in SAN, that’s right, the Network. We did not just take JBOD and add a few ethernet ports LeftHand has a vision of Data living on the network, Data being accessed over the network and data being mobile across the networks As such, LeftHand made different design decisions. We, in fact, feel that our open iSCSI SANs are “Better by Design”, and it is this approach that enables our SHARP benefits. The decision to focus on the N in SAN led us to architect a solution that is Modular, not Monolith and is Truly clustered. As you can see from the diagram, we also build a SAN using a Disk Array and a Controller. However, we use them in a single systems. An enterprise Class x87 industry standard server. Now, when you add capacity, you are adding not only capacity, but additional CPU cycles, network bandwidth and cache. BTW, you are also adding another controller for redundancy. Now, let’s take a look at SAN/iQ specific features True Clustered Storage – as I mentioned earlier during our Performance disussion, we are truly clustered and will load-balance/stripe across all available spindles Highly virtualized for Management – because SAN/iQ is a distributed, clustered Storage Software plaform, the management paradigm is the same whether you have 2 nodes, 10 nodes or 20 nodes; whether you are at a single location, two locations or multiple locations. Being Network centric in our design enables the safe, efficient management of your entire SAN, no matter where located Scalable Capacity and Performance – we have already covered this Always on line volumes – this is a key high-availability feature. SAN/iQ maintains a database of all data blocks and their current location. This enables us to realize our vision of data mobility. With the SAN/iQ management console, you can move a volume from one system/cluster to another (for example, you are adding capacity to your SAN with an higher performing NSM). The data volume can be moved in the management console with a simple drag and drop. While the volume is moving in the background, SAN/iQ still knows which data blocks are on the old systems and which are on the new systems. Therefore, it can continue to serve data while moving it! The end user/application has no idea the data is moving. When the data move is complete, the end users only sees improved response time!!!! We have talked about Campus SAN and Network RAID already. So, these are features that are unique to SAN/iQ and LeftHand Networks open iSCSI SANs. What about features that are available in the industry…

10 SAN/iQ - Open iSCSI Storage
Presentation Title SAN/iQ - Open iSCSI Storage VI3 Cluster Virtualized Cluster iSCSI Cluster Open Management Software x86 Based Storage and Server Platforms Intel-Based Storage Platforms Standards-Based Hardware Platform So, I mentioned the term “open iscsi storage”. What do we need by “open”. (CLICK) Well, LeftHand SAN/iQ is software that provides the intelligence for clustering and managing an iSCSI SAN. We place our SAN/iQ software on Standards-Based Hardware Platforms We leave the hardware to the hardware vendors Not only does this give you non-proprietary hardware, but it drives down the price by making the hardware vendors compete for your business. We allow it to communicate open protocol, iSCSI. Copyright © 2005 LeftHand Networks corporate presentation. All rights reserved.
