With the SDW, IT also has the ability to dynamically provision and manage updates, patches and migrations for end users across not just virtual machines but physical endpoints as well. What’s more, IT has the flexibility to move end users between physical and virtual machines—so if for example an end user’s laptop were to break—this end users could be given a virtual machine until their laptop was reimaged and then the user could move back to their physical endpoint. VMware ThinApp Links the Application, Virtual Operating System (VOS), File System and Registry into a Single EXE MSI File Windows Operating System Application Encapsulation & Isolation Intercepts file and system calls Process Loading- start exe from VOS, Launch from host OS (Virtual/Physical).   DLL Loading. Loads EXE/DLL/OCX dependencies. Thread & Process Management. VOS tracks all processes and threads inside virtual registry (Sandbox of Runtime Modifications). ThinApp Secure Compressed Container (EXE) Application Applications are encapsulated in their own container Each application is separated from other applications and the operating system Application virtualization intercepts file and system calls between the application and the OS Process Loading. The VOS loads a starting EXE file from the Virtual File System and allows it to execute any other EXE directly from the Virtual File System or from the local file system.   DLL Loading. 24 Horizon Mirage – Architektur
Let’s talk about the Horizon Mirage architecture. Deploy one or many Horizon Mirage servers in the data center, attach it to NAS or SAN storage. If you have multiple Horizon mirage servers, simply place them behind a load balancer. At that point, The Horizon mirage admin can leverage that deployment from anywhere in the world using just one admin console. Install the 4MB horizon mirage client on your end users PC, and they can connect to the horizon mirage servers from anywhere in the world, too, regardless of being on the lan, wan, or over vpn. Mirage will run transparently in the background and synchronize all of their end-user data to the data center, while also pulling down any It-driven data (like a windows image) to the local device. What you have is a bi-directional synch that allows end users to backup what they care most about- their data, profile and user-installed apps, but also allows IT to push down key updates and images at the same time. And since horizon Mirage runs locally on the end user’s PC, they can go online or offline as much as they want, and horizon mirage will simply connect and synch whenever they are back online, but with no interruption to that end user’s productivity while they’re offline.

One of the major challenges for IT in this new world-is how to manage the day to day operations of their environement-without any added costs or required resources. At VMware we provide closed loop management and ensure that IT can not only provision and set policy around desktops and apps, but that they can also have access to the analytics and tools that they need to quickly remediate any issues, orchestrate the provisioning of new images and desktops and have a window into costs and usage. This closed loop management (and many of these products will be coming out in the next couple of months) ensures that IT has a solid window into their environment and can deliver the best possible SLAs to end users—all at lower operational costs. Slide Script: Before diving into the particulars of what it is we plan to do here, it’s worth taking a minute to explain how the value of management for the Virtual Workspace builds on itself to create ever increasing strategic value for the enterprise. It begins of course with a solid, useful technology like VDI or App-Remoting with RDS with Horizon View. From there, we enhance the management and reduce the OPEX of that remote desktop/app solution with streamlined single image management. This has historically been done with technologies like View Composer, and we are actively making investments to further simplify image management and bridge the worlds of physical and virtual with Horizon Mirage. We now can also add on an operations management technology like vCenter Operations for View. Such a solution is critical to maintain reliability and efficiency of the overall solution as scales increase and the potential for infrastructure gremlins to impact user experience grows. Up until this point, the value we’ve been discussing is largely value for end users and the IT departments that support them. Going up a level, we now start to bring deeper efficiency for the workflow of the entire business by extending control and automation of the Virtual Workspace with vCloud Automation Center (vCAC). Now standard operations like user entitlement and provisioning can be accessed in a self-service fashion by a line of business, or even kicked off automatically with appropriate approval chains as part of an HR onboarding process. Finally, moving up one more level from business automation to business optimization, end user computing workloads have traditionally been a black-hole of cost in most organizations. Horizon FLEX is an ideal solution for ‘Bring Your Own’ use cases, since it allows an employee to use their own Mac or PC for work purposes, but keeping corporate data, apps and resources completely isolated from personal content by restricting them to a highly secure, managed ‘container’ in which a self contained Windows virtual desktop is executed. This container is completely under the management control of the organization, including content, entitlement and can be enabled, disabled or even completely wiped as required. However, the organization only controls the secure container – it cannot change, access or even see the personal content outside of the container. A further advantage that Horizon FLEX provides is that once the Windows virtual machine has been deployed to the endpoint, it can execute locally without the need for a continuous network connection. View can also be a highly effective BYO solution where a reliable continuous network connection is available. Horizon FLEX can be thought of as a hybrid of the two other approaches. It uses the principle of ‘central management, local execution’ like Mirage, but the image being executed is a virtual Windows desktop, like Horizon with View. The integral Policy Server allows detailed and fine-grained control over user entitlement and because the virtual desktop is being executed in a secure isolated container on the Mac or PC endpoint, FLEX has been designed and is ideally suited for BYO use cases, especially where there is a need for off-network working.
