Simple Past The Narrative Past

2 Types of Verbs-Weak or Strong Weak Verbs also called Regular verbs take te. In English we add an –ed to weak verbs while in German a –te is added. Zum Beispiel: He asked his mother. Auf Deutsch: Er fragte seine Mutter.

Irregular Verbs or Strong Verbs Strong verbs never end in –te but undergo vowel changes and usually end in en. Example-He went home. (went came from go) Zum Beispiel: Er ging nach Hause.

Purpose of Simple Past Tense Purpose to express oneself in the past found usually in magazines and books. It is commonly known as the reading past tense. It is not usually used in conversational German.
