In written German, use quotation marks with an exact quote, or use indirect speech. The Konjunktiv I, used to report indirect speech, is often found in the news and in informative articles.

In the Konjunktiv I, stem-changing verbs do not change; they, too, are formed using the infinitive.

Max: „ Ich musste mit 18 zur Armee gehen.” Max sagte, er habe mit 18 zur Armee gehen müssen. Max said he had to join the army at 18.

There is only one Konjunktiv I form of the past tense. The past tense form of the Konjunktiv I requires the Konjunktiv I of either haben or sein [+ past participle]. Past tenseKonjunktiv I Der liberale Student hat protestiert. Der liberale Student protestierte. The liberal student protested. Sie sagte, der liberale Student habe protestiert. She said that the liberal student had protested.

Sentences using reported or indirect speech are often introduced by such verbs as meinen, denken, glauben, erörtern (to expand on), behaupten (to maintain), antworten, wiederholen.

The introductory phrase can include such verbs as fragen and sich fragen. Lola: „Wann wurde die Sklaverei abgeschafft?” Lola fragte, wann die Sklaverei abgeschafft worden sei. Lola asked when slavery had been abolished.

Der Soldat: „Кämpft mit uns!” Der Soldat sagte, wir sollen mit ihnen kämpfen. The soldier said we should fight with them. Die Königin: „Singen Sie die Nationalhymne!” Die Königin sagte, wir sollen die Nationalhymne singen. The queen said we should sing the national anthem.
