2 Imperativ Es gibt drei Imperativformen von Verben
du ihr Sie Used to express commands Giving orders Giving instructions Making suggestions Expressing wishes In written German an exclamation point is typically used with this verb form

3 Formen – Familiar singular (du)
Takes the stem of the verb sitzen – Sitz! spielen – Spiel! An –e can be added, but is usually omitted in informal usage Sitz(e)! Spiel(e)! “du” can be added for emphasis or clarification Warum muss ich immer gehen? Geh du doch mal! Exceptions: If the stem ends in –d or –t; then the –e must be added Arbeite! Warte! Finde! Rede!

4 Formen – Familiar singular (du)
Exceptions (cont.): -e is always added if stem ends in –m or –n preceded by another consonant, but not if the consonant is an “l” or “r” Zeichne! Öffne! Atme! Lern! -e is always added if stem ends in –ig Entschuldige mich! Verbs with the stem change e>i or e>ie take the change in the imperative form, but never take an –e at the end Lies!, Nimm!

5 Formen – Familiar Plural (ihr)
Identical to the ihr-form present tense Geht ins Bett! Zeichnet mir ein Bild! “ihr” can be added for emphasis or clarification Es gibt noch Zeit! Macht ihr doch das!

6 Formen – Formal (Sie) Identical to the Sie-form present tense
Pronoun “Sie” is always used Sprechen Sie bitte langsamer! Remember it is polite to add a “bitte”, but isn’t necessary

7 Formen von “sein” Familiar singular Familiar plural Formal
Sei bitte ruhig! Familiar plural Seid bitte ruhig! Formal Seien Sie bitte ruhig!

8 Der wir-Imperativ English imperatives beginning with “Let’s” are expressed with the infinitive + wir Let’s go into the classroom! Gehen wir ins Klassenzimmer! Let’s speak German! Sprechen wir Deutsch! This can also be expressed by the verb “lassen”

9 “Flavoring” particles
doch Persuasion – Komm doch mit! Impatience – Mach es doch! mal Soften – Sagen Sie mal, schreiben wir morgen eine Klausur? Leaving time – Schreib doch mal! nur Reassurance/encouragement – Glaub mir nur! Insistence/warning – Fahrt nur nicht zu schnell!
