2 9.2 Lektion 9 Wirtschaft und Berufsaussichten STRUKTUREN © and ® 2012 Vista Higher Learning, Inc. 9.2-2 Plurals and compound nouns In English, nouns often add –s, –es, or –ies to make the plural (strike strikes, tax taxes, party parties) and some have irregular plural forms (mouse mice). In German, there are several ways to form plurals. Nouns can have no change in the plural or they can add –e, –en, –n, –er, or –s. Some nouns add an Umlaut in the plural. Nouns can be grouped into categories according to how they form the plural.

They require no endings. Some of these nouns do add an Umlaut to the stem vowel in the plural. der Inhaber der Vater der Mantel die Inhaber die Väter die Mäntel das Darlehen das Mädchen die Darlehen die Mädchen
