What are Nouns? A noun is a word that names something: something tangible - a person, a place, a thing, an animal something intangible - an event, an activity, an idea, an abstraction, an emotion, a concept In German, all NOUNS are CAPITALIZED.

3 What are Articles? Definite article Indefinite article “the”
An article is a word placed before a noun to show whether the noun refers to a particular person, animal, place, thing, event or idea or whether the noun refers to an unspecified person, thing, animal, place, event or idea. “the” “der, die, das” Indefinite article “a, an” “ein, eine”

Definite Articles DER Nouns considered masculine in gender may be people who are male: der Mann, der Soldat, der Junge, der Kapitän, der Mensch, der König Or they may be nouns with no concept of gender in the English language: der Tisch, der Stuhl, der Park, der Realismus, der Wagen, der Tag

5 Definite Articles DIE Nouns considered feminine in gender may be people who are female: die Frau, die Mutter, die Königin Or they may be nouns with no concept of gender in the English language: die Tür, die Sonne, die Erde, die Demokratie, die Straße die Gesundheit, die Wirklichkeit

6 Definite Articles DAS Nouns considered neuter in gender may still be people: das Kind, das Mädchen, das Fräulein Or they may be nouns with no concept of gender in the English language: das Ende, das Hotel, das Haus, das Buch, das Bett, das Licht

7 die Plural articles The definite article is always “die”.
Plural nouns have no indefinite articles. “ein” and “eine” = “a” so there is only one - no plural is possible with “ein”, but “einige” = a few.

8 Noun Gender and Pronouns
The gender of a noun (der, die, das) determines which pronoun will be used in reference to that noun. Der Mann ist hier. Er ist hier. Die Frau ist nett. Sie ist nett. Das Buch ist neu. Es ist neu.

9 Noun Gender and Pronouns
The pronoun agrees in the gender of the noun article even when the noun is not a person or and animal and has no natural gender (sex). Der Wind ist kalt. Er ist kalt. Die Blume ist schön. Sie ist schön. Das Kind ist brav. Es ist brav.

10 Welche Farbe hat die Rose?
Sie ist rot.

11 Welche Form hat der Ball?
Er ist rund.

12 Das Kind ist krank. Es ist im Bett.
