 Präsentation transkript:

Was ist PatBase? PatBase ist die erste von professionellen Rechercheuren entwickelte Patentdatenbank. Alle Daten sind nach Patentfamilien gruppiert 28 Millionen Patentfamilien, ab Anfang 20. Jahrhundert Umfasst Veröffentlichungen aller Patentämter mit signifikanten Anmeldezahlen (insgesamt 36): [AT, AU, BE, CA, CH, CN, DD, DE, DK, EP, ES, FI, FR, GB, GR, HK, IE, IL, IT, JP, KR, LU, MC, MY, NL, NO, NZ, PT, RU, SE, SG, SU, TW, US, WO, ZA] PatBase data is arranged into families, so that means searching is more efficient. PatBase covers all significant patent publishers. There is no need to worry about linking together different database records (many competitors have organised similar databases as individual records per country – e.g. MicroPatent, PlusPat), or transferring results from one file to another to view results, or spend time (and money) linking up families. In PatBase all the work has been done for you. . . . www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Warum sollte ich PatBase verwenden? PatBase bietet ein multifunktionelles Recherchesystem, inklusive: Englischen Abstracts Figuren Drei der wichtigsten Klassifikationssysteme (USPC, IPC, ECLA) Täglichen Updates Flexibler Benutzeroberfläche Integrierten Analyse-Tools Integrierten Abrechnungs-Tools, auch mit Mehrfachkonten, insbesondere für Patentanwälte Each record (usually) contains an English abstract and a drawing. Together with the other bibliographic information, a good overview of the invention can be gained. Reference to the full-text and/or pdf’s of the family members is just a click away. PatBase features the three main classification systems, which sets it apart from several competitors. Searches can be made by combining classification systems; for example “Give me all records with my selected USPC, and for the remaining those with my selected ECLA, and for any remaining my selected IPC”. Another possibility (for very thorough searches) is to generate a result set by combining USPC or ECLA or IPC. Searches can also be made through any of the fields, or combinations thereof. The PatBase search engine has the facility to use many different operators such as truncation and proximity, for searching by keyword(s). PatBase is updated continuously. For example, on the day of publication, data for US, EP and WO is added, giving it a big time advantage. The search interface is very flexible, and includes results analysis tools. Pie charts and tables of analysed results can be generated in seconds. PatBase does not charge by time, nor are charges made for records displayed or printed. However, you can set up rates to mimic pay-as-you-go charging, in your own currency. By being able to “charge” your online sessions to sub-accounts, PatBase provides a complete tool for billing your clients for work conducted on PatBase, and for keeping records of what you have done. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Wer sollte PatBase verwenden? Ingenieure und Wissenschaftler in F&E Patentanwälte Patentrechercheure Patentingenieure/-referenten Patentportfoliospezialisten/-analysten Although PatBase was designed with the professional searcher in mind, PatBase is simple and intuitive to use, especially via its form-based search interface. No training is required to master the basics. The help files and on-screen prompts provide useful assistance with your searches. The inclusion of patent analysis tools, and the ability to import/export data freely, open up PatBase to be used for a variety of applications. PatBase also features links to patent status and registers, and full-text, where readily available. www.

It is difficult to compare costs, because other patent databases usually charge on a time basis. [Some larger (corporate) users strike fixed-price deals, but the costs are significantly higher than PatBase, for similar data]. PatBase charges are anticipated to be between one half and two thirds of other Patent databases. There are no hidden extras with PatBase such as additional charges for what is known as “parking charges”, network charges, display or printing, family commands and absolutely no extra charges to display legal status information and full text. Speed: Search strategies are greatly simplified, as the records are actual patent families. Duplication between searches of e.g. US and Europe are eliminated, as a combined search can be performed. Therefore, searches can be performed and results can be analysed far more quickly on PatBase. PatBase also responds more quickly than pay-as-you-go databases in tests we have conducted. Comfort: No more rushing to keep the online charges down, or “parking” in inexpensive files to review the results. PatBase is not charged by time. Also no more costly mistakes, or calling the service provider because you inadvertently spent a lot of money by making an expensive display or print command. All of this adds up to a much more comfortable and efficient way of searching. You spend your time thinking about the search, not how much it is costing you! Coverage: US, EP, and WO data appear on the day of publication, which is very competitive (Derwent World Patents Index, a database organised into families, for example, is several weeks behind). www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Das Hauptmenü www.PatBase.com Menüleiste Menü-Tabs Abfragezeile We use your email address as your login, as this allows us to integrate other services. Also if there are any service modifications, we will email you with the details. Once you have logged in, the main menu is where it all starts. At any point you can return to this menu. At the top of the screen you will see the toolbar (it floats when outside the main menu). From the toolbar you can also navigate to any part of the search interface. The Main Menu has a number of tabs. The Search tab covers all aspects of searching. The next two tabs (order and alerts) relate to other services . . . . more about these later. The last two tabs (settings and accounting) are for user preferences, which we will also come back to later. At the bottom of the screen is the Command Line, which will be described later. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Das Abfrage-Formular www.PatBase.com Index-Link Kontext-bezogene Hilfe The Search Form is a convenient and simple way to perform many searches. With the on screen help, someone new to PatBase can quickly master using the search form. An example: Golf and Club in Abstract or Title. Then add US,WO,JP in CC. Then add from 1960 to 1980 in PD. Most other patent databases would be slow for the CC= step, and very slow for the PD ranging (you can usually safely go for a coffee break for the PD ranging step!). As an alternative, combine Golf and Club with cc=(cn,kr,tw,sg,hk) for an overview of SE Asian coverage. Combine with PD=1990 to 2000. PatBase has an extensive array of search operators to assist your search: Wildcards (* and ?): * = zero or more characters; ? = one character. Examples: laser*, locali?e (picks up localise and localize) Adjacency (w): w = within (either way around). Examples: golf w3 club Fuzzy (%): % = one character discrepancy. Examples: colo%r and mask Phonic (#): # returns similar sounding words. [Included for completeness, but of little/no application to PatBase or patent searching] Stemming (~): ~ returns words with similar endings. Examples: cache~ (cached, caches, caching, cacheable …); mask~. E.g: “colo%r and mask~”, and “flexible~ and golf and club%”. Search Forms do have their limitations, particularly if you wish to use other than an “and” operator between different fields. For example, if occurrences of, say, Moreno in either the applicant and/or inventor fields was required, then the Search Form would not suffice. Of course you could do the search for the applicant and the inventor separately. But there is a better way – via the Command Line. . . . www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Recherchieren mit der Abfragesprache Abfragezeile in der Größe verstellbar Command Line searching allows you to enter complex Boolean statements. From the previous slide, combining applicant and inventor in an “or” function is simple: pa=Moreno or in=Moreno. For those of you familiar with command line searching, we allow pa=, /pa, or \pa. To view the History you can type H or ..his. In other words, your favourite search field descriptors will work on PatBase (so long as there are no conflicts). The help files contain all the possible options. Instead of ‘and’ ‘or’ and ‘not’, you can also use ‘+’ ‘,’ and ‘-’. Command line statements include [in brackets ( ) are alternatives]: V = view (T, L, ..li, prt) B = browse (..br) H = display history (..his) ..er = erase history A = analysis (..stat) Examples: B s3 20-35 (browse set 3 results numbers 20 to 35 inclusive). The Command Line can be hidden, or a single line (default setting), or enlarged to multi-line. Once you are familiar with Command Line searching you will probably use this method, as the command line and history windows are displayed together. This arrangement makes for a very efficient and easy way to develop search strategies. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Im Index nachschlagen www.PatBase.com Index wählen Einträge finden Einträge kopieren In das Formular kopieren Klassen nachschlagen It is possible to see at a glance all of the entries in a particular field (or all fields together). This is helpful if you are having difficulty in identifying something. Index browsing is also useful for estimating the size of as task (show examples). ic=a23c19 (cheese products), and ec=a23c19. Once you have identified entries in the Indexes, it is possible to paste them directly into the Search Form (use above example, and one with the Assignee field “Strix”). You can search terms, not just words. For example, the Assignee Index contains the whole of each Assignee name, not just the first word. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Anzeige der Historie www.PatBase.com Suchschritt Abfrage Trefferzahl Anzeige-optionen ~ Operator für Wortstammsuche % Operator für Fuzzy Match Once you start a search, the display switches to the History window. From here you can keep track of what you have done, re-visit past result sets, or combine past result sets. In other words you can develop your strategy in real time. Remember, there is no charge for connect time, so there is no need to worry about taking too long! From each result set, you can decide which form of results display you would like. You can also save result sets, or place an order for pdf full specifications (note you need to subscribe to the pdf patent copy service for the latter). We will now look at the different ways in which you can display results. There are two main options, View and Browse. In View mode, the results are presented in a continuous list, in batches of 20 (you can adjust this number). . . . www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Trefferanzeige www.PatBase.com Optionen Anzeige/ Sortieren Links zu: Rechtsstand Klassen-definitionen EspaceNet Volltext Register PDF-Bestellung To help you scroll through the results, there are navigation icons (^ < >). Demonstrate. The display format can be selected from a number of options. There are four main display formats – Scan, Biblio, Full and Classic, and eight further specialised display formats. The default is Full, but again you can adjust the default setting. Demonstrate. There are also many different sort options. Demonstrate. Illustrate the differences between the four main display formats, and what each format might be used for (Scan for a quick review of the results; Biblio for Applicant/Inventor searches; Full or Classic for subject matter searches). PatBase recognizes the importance of being able to consult freely available patent resources. So links are provided for you to look at the status, patent register (only for those countries with Patent Offices that have web-based patent registers), or full text. Explain the concept of family number and master patent: As PatBase is divided into families, we give each record (or family) a family number (fn). The fn is displayed at the top of each record. Each fn has a designated Master Patent. The purpose of this is that when you view the results list, you see more than just a family number. In addition, we make the Master Patent the US patent (if one exists in the family), else a WO, else EP, else GB, else FR, else DE. The idea is that the Master Patent will be in English whenever possible, and hence the abstract and title will also be in English. So when you display a list of results in the Browse window, you see the Master Patent numbers. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Einzel-Anzeige mit Index Ergebnisse markieren / zwischen-speichern Datensatz drucken Figuren an-sehen mit Doppelklick Anzeige- und Sortieroptionen sind jederzeit veränderbar The Browse results window displays records one at a time. However, there is also a list of results (in batches of 20 by default, but again this can be modified). In Browse mode you can optionally show/hide titles, and show/hide family members. Notice also that your selected terms are highlighted (in titles and abstracts) to help you locate the relevant passages of text. When you make a country restriction, the family members are also highlighted in the Browse list (when the family members are shown). This is particularly useful if you are only searching through selected countries. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Analyse-Tools www.PatBase.com RWS Group There are many uses for the Analysis tool, aside from analysing the results. For example, the analysis tool can be used to identify classifications to search. In the following example, we use the analysis tool to find UC classifications to search, and then EC classifications to search from a result set produced by UC. Enter: Golf and club% w3 flexible~ in the title/abstract line of the search form. After searching, display the UC analysis in full form. Check out the definitions of 473/316, 473/282, and 473/289, and then search the first and last in order to locate EC classifications to search. The following example helps identify suitable US classifications to search. Search for “baseball and glove%”, and then analyse by US Class at Full level. Click to the definitions of the top 3 (2/19, D29/115, and 2/161.1), this illustrates that relevant classifications have been located. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Analyse-Tools (2) www.PatBase.com Treffer-Tabelle Klassen mit Links zu den Definitionen Häufigkeit Analyse mit Torten-diagramm Statistical Analysis of search results can be performed on any answer set. The Patent Assignee (company name) or the Classification (IPC, ECLA, USPC) can be analysed. All field data can be transferred to Excel so that further analyses can be performed. There is no extra cost for this feature. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Log-Datei www.PatBase.com Die Sitzung kann auf Ihrem PC abgespeichert werden Das Anzeigeformat der Log-Datei ist variabel Whilst you are working, PatBase keeps a complete log of your activities, in the Session Log File. The Session Log File keeps a record of your search statements, and all displayed records. You can adjust the form of the displayed Session Log. One small point, you can re-connect to your previous Session Log File within two hours (there is an option at log in). Your Session Log File can be expanded or reduced (show examples). You can also export your Session Log, and save it locally on your PC. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Strategie, Historie und Ergebnisverzeichnis speichern Zur späteren Verwendung lokal speichern: Die Strategie (Suchschritte einer Recherche) Die Historie (Resultate der Suchschritte) Das Ergebnisverzeichnis (besonders wertvolle zwischenselektierte Datensätze) After you have developed search strategies, you can save them (show example). Saving a search strategy does not save the results of the search, so this is useful if you have to run searches of a similar type from time-to-time. If required, a saved strategy can be edited (and re-saved) before being run again. Likewise for Search Histories (show example). Saving search histories is used in cases where you cannot complete the search in the current session, and wish to return to the search at a later time. As you work through the results of your search, the Results Folder allows you to select individual records. The selected records are put in a folder, which can be saved for future reference, exported to a report, used for a more in-depth review of the selected records, or for ordering PDF patent copies (show examples). www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Anzeige-Optionen einstellen At the outset we stressed that PatBase is flexible. You can set your own preferences for record display. But remember that you can always override this default setting. (Enter: B S2 1-10 in the Command Line to demonstrate this function). Default settings can also be changed – some can also be set by an overall administrator for a group of users, and later can be changed by the administrator at any time. If there is no overall administrator, all default settings can easily be altered by the user whenever necessary. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Nutzer-Bericht www.PatBase.com RWS Group PatBase allows you to see your usage (and that of your users if you are a domain manager) at all times. You can produce reports by month, and print or download them to Excel. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

Kundenkonto und Abrechnungsmodus einstellen PatBase has an integrated billing system for your clients. Once set up, PatBase will automatically calculate how much you should charge your clients (of course, you input the charging parameters yourself and can change these according to your own requirements). www.PatBase.com RWS Group

PDF-Kopien bestellen www.PatBase.com Ausgewählte Schriften werden in die Schriften-bestellung kopiert Ein Link zu den PDF-Kopien wird per Email an den Nutzer geschickt The PDF patent copy service (which is an optional service with a separate subscription) is integrated into PatBase. There are two options; a limited service (up to 200 patent copies), or unlimited (Show examples). As you mark a patent in the family table, it is added to the Order box of patents to be ordered. You can also add an entire results set to the Order box. When you are ready to order the patents, click the Order tab on the Main Menu, or on the Toolbar. The above screen will display with the selected patents pasted into the Order box. You can edit the patent list, and/or add other patents manually. When ready, click on Order to start the patent order process. The patents will be passed to the Order server, and your request will be processed. When the patents have been obtained, you will be sent an email with a link to download the PDF’s. www.PatBase.com RWS Group

CAPRI – the Computerised Administration of Patents Reclassified by International patent classification, is a backfile of patents that have been retrospectively reclassified by IPC. CAPRI is a static collection. GlobalPat is a bibliographic file of patent data, with a heavy US bias. GlobalPat was a useful source of data for filling in gaps. INPADOC is the backbone of PatBase, and is our most important data source. The EPO produces INPADOC from data drawn from patent offices around the world. It is fundamental to any international patent database. However, INPADOC data requires re-working by us to make optimum use of the data, on an on-going basis.
