Strukturen 3B.1 LEKTION 3B 3B.1-1© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Infinitive expressions and clauses Startblock When you use a non-modal verb with an infinitive clause, add the preposition zu before the infinitive.

Strukturen 3B.1 LEKTION 3B 3B.1-2© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Infinitive expressions and clauses You learned that when a conjugated modal verb modifies the meaning of another verb, the infinitive moves to the end of the sentence. The preposition zu is not needed in this case. Ich möchte Checkpoint Charlie besuchen. I want to visit Checkpoint Charlie. Es regnet. Wir mu ̈ ssen unsere Regenmäntel anziehen. It’s raining. We need to put on our raincoats.

Strukturen 3B.1 LEKTION 3B 3B.1-3© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Infinitive expressions and clauses After most other verbs, however, you need to put zu before the infinitive clause. Place zu plus the infinitive at the end of the sentence. Es macht viel Spaß zu reisen! Travelling is so much fun! Ich hatte keine Zeit, Postkarten zu schreiben. I didn’t have time to write postcards.

Strukturen 3B.1 LEKTION 3B 3B.1-4© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Infinitive expressions and clauses ACHTUNG The comma before an infinitive clause is optional. Use it for clarity, especially in longer sentences. Any adverbs that modify the infinitive expression come after the comma: Es ist schön, im Sommer Eis zu essen.

Strukturen 3B.1 LEKTION 3B 3B.1-5© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Infinitive expressions and clauses When using a double verb expression like spazieren gehen, put the preposition zu between the two verbs. Die Kinder haben Angst, schwimmen zu gehen. The kids are afraid to go swimming. Es ist uns zu teuer, jeden Abend essen zu gehen. Going out to eat every night is too expensive for us.

Strukturen 3B.1 LEKTION 3B 3B.1-6© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Infinitive expressions and clauses If the verb in the infinitive clause is a separable prefix verb, place zu between the prefix and the main part of the verb. Es macht keinen Spaß, die Ku ̈ che aufzuräumen. Cleaning the kitchen is no fun. Vergiss bitte nicht, den Mu ̈ ll rauszubringen. Please don’t forget to take out the trash.

Strukturen 3B.1 LEKTION 3B 3B.1-7© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Infinitive expressions and clauses Infinitive constructions with zu often occur after the verbs anfangen, beginnen, vergessen, helfen, and finden, the expressions Lust haben (to be in the mood), Angst haben, and Spaß machen, and the adjectives einfach, wichtig (important), and schön. Ich habe vergessen, meine Eltern anzurufen. I forgot to call my parents. Kannst du mir bitte helfen, meine Bordkarte zu finden? Can you please help me find my boarding pass? Wir haben keine Lust, heute Abend auszugehen. We don’t feel like going out this evening. Ich finde es wichtig, pu ̈ nktlich zu sein. I think it’s important to be on time.

Infinitive expressions and clauses The expressions um… zu (in order to), ohne… zu (without), and anstatt… zu (instead of ) are frequently used in infinitive clauses. Anstatt is often shortened to statt, especially in informal conversation. Ich esse viel Gemu ̈ se und gehe jeden Tag schwimmen, um fit zu bleiben. I eat lots of vegetables and swim every day to stay fit. Man kann einen schönen Urlaub machen, ohne ins Ausland zu fahren. You can have a nice vacation without going abroad. Strukturen 3B.1 LEKTION 3B 3B.1-10© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Infinitive expressions and clauses In sentences with um… zu, ohne… zu, or (an)statt… zu, the infinitive clause may be the first element in a sentence. When the infinitive clause is the first element, the conjugated verb becomes the second element, and the subject comes after the conjugated verb. Statt zu schlafen, hat Peter die ganze Nacht gelesen. Instead of sleeping, Peter spent all night reading. Um ein Zimmer in diesem Hotel zu bekommen, muss man sehr fru ̈ h buchen. To get a room at that hotel, you have to book early.
