Zeit describes a span of time, while Mal refers to specific occurrences and repetitions. Ich habe noch 50 Minuten Zeit vor meinem Flug. I still have 50 minutes before my flight. Ich war nur einmal in Hamburg. I’ve only been to Hamburg once.

To describe how long something lasted, use dauern + the accusative. Die Kreuzfahrt dauerte einen Monat. The cruise lasted a month. Nächsten Sommer fahren wir an den Strand. Next summer we’re going to the beach. Letzten Montag haben meine Ferien angefangen. My break started last Monday. Die Studenten tanzten die ganze Nacht. The students danced all night long.

Time expressions Use the present tense with seit plus a dative time expression or schon plus an accusative time expression to indicate how long something has been going on. Seit einem Monat wohnt Patrick in Berlin. Patrick has been living in Berlin for a month. Er studiert schon zwei Jahre in Deutschland. He’s been studying in Germany for two years.

Use the dative case with these time expressions. Vor einem Jahr studierte ich im Ausland. A year ago I was studying abroad. Mein Geburtstag ist am 18. Februar. My birthday is on February 18.

Time expressions Use the time expressions zuerst (first), dann (then), danach (after that), and zuletzt (last) to narrate a series of events. Zuerst musst du die wichtigen Papiere in das Handgepäck packen. First you have to pack your important papers in the carry-on bag. Dann kannst du die anderen Sachen in den großen Koffer packen. Then you can pack the other things in the big suitcase.
