3 VERB SECOND Vast majority of sentences have the conjugated verb as the second item The first item can be: A single word  Wir essen Hähnchen und Kartoffeln. A phrase  In meiner Familie gibt es zwei Personen, zwei Katzen und einen Hund. A full clause  Weil wir alle Hunger haben, essen wir ein Pizza.

4 VERB LAST A subject and a verb together make a “clause”
2 types of clauses = main clause & subordinate clause Main clause = full sentence; can stand by itself Mein Vater hat einen Wagen gemietet. Wir trinken Wasser. Subordinate clause = fragment; does not make a sentence by itself Weil unser Auto so klein ist… Wenn wir Durst haben…

5 VERB LAST In subordinate clauses in German, the conjugated verb goes last Subordinate clauses usually introduced by a subordinate conjunction Conjunction kicks conjugated verb to the end of the clause Doesn’t matter what tense the sentence is in Examples: Mein Vater hat einen Wagen gemietet, weil unser Auto so klein ist. Wenn wir Durst haben, trinken wir Wasser.

6 SUBORDNIATE CONJUNCTIONS

7 SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTIONS
Translate the following sentences: He may not listen to music while he does his homework. When I was 16 years old I went to Germany. I would like to know whether the car is black or red. She drinks water whenever she is thirsty. We are eating outside (draussen) although it is cold.

8 COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS
Auf Deutsch Auf Englisch und and aber but; however oder or denn because (not used as much as “weil”) sondern but rather (as in: “not this, but rather that” Join two clauses together Do NOT change the word order of either clause Example: Er ist alt, aber ich bin jung.
