4 Which ingredients do we need to make a perfect burger? There are ALWAYS at least 3 parts: 1. The top of the bun: the subject 2. The burger: the bit of haben or sein 3. The bottom of the bun: the past participle The pronoun (person) The correct bit of haben or sein Anything else A past participle

5 An example of a Perfect Burger I played tennis The subject (person) The correct bit of haben or sein Anything else A past participle Ich habe Tennis gespielt

6 But how do I make a past participle? Regular verbs follow a pattern Take the infinitive spielen Chop off the en spielen Add a ge at the beginning gespiel Add a t at the end gespielt Make these verbs into past participles! kaufen (to buy)machen (to do/make)hören (to listen to) faulenzen (to laze about)surfen (to surf)

7 Do all past participles work like this? In a word – NO! There are some irregular past participles – most of these end in –en. You will have to learn these verbs as they dont follow the pattern of regular past participles. schreiben geschrieben sehen gesehen nehmen genommen essen gegessen trinken getrunken

8 But when do we use haben for the burger and when do we use sein? Haben Almost all verbs use haben! Sein A few verbs use sein, these are usually verbs of movement. Their past participles are also irregular! gehen (gegangen) to go fahren (gefahren) to travel bleiben (geblieben) to stay schwimmen (geschwommen) to swim reiten (geritten) to horse-ride
