2 würde - would Ich wohne in der Stadt. I live in the city. But this may not be the case. Maybe I live in the country, but would live in the city. I need to add würde. Ich würde in der Stadt wohnen. I would live in the city.

3 Include würde in these sentences Ich schwimme den ganzen Tag. Ich würde den ganzen Tag schwimmen. Ich kaufe ein neues Hemd. Ich würde ein neues Hemd kaufen. Ich trinke nicht jeden Tag Cola. Ich würde nicht jeden Tag Cola trinken.

4 Wenn ich … (infinitive ) würde, würde ich Ich gewinne im Lotto. Ich kaufe einen Sportwagen. This is not true. I can only wish that things were different. Wenn ich im Lotto gewinnen würde, würde ich einen Sportwagen kaufen.

5 Now try this! Ich bekomme 100 000 Pfund. Ich kaufe ein neues Haus. What can I say – as this is not the case. Wenn ich 100 000 Pfund bekommen würde, würde ich ein neues Haus kaufen.

6 hätte und wäre In German, you dont normally say haben würde. Instead you say hätte. Haben würde = hätte. The same applies to sein würde. Sein würde = wäre.

7 Wenn ich … hätte, würde ich … - If I had …, I would I have more time. I travel. This is not true – I can only wish that things were different. Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich reisen.

8 Now try this! Ich habe viel Geld. Ich lebe in der Karibik. This is not true – Again, I can only wish things were different. What do I say: Wenn ich viel Geld hätte, würde ich in der Karibik leben.

9 Wenn ich … wäre, würde ich … - If I were …, I would Ich bin erwachsen. Ich arbeite. Wenn ich erwachsen wäre, würde ich arbeiten.

11 The conditional tense You use the conditional when you want to say would. In German, you use the following parts of the verb werden plus the infinitive at the end of the sentence. However, remember that haben würde = hätte and haben sein = wäre.
