First, let’s start with a financial services company that’s using transformed backups to accelerate expansion into worldwide operations. They’re able to do this because they know their data, wherever it is, is safe. With our Data Domain deduplication storage systems as a foundation, this company not only trusts that its local backup will succeed but also protects again site loss. Next, a technology company is using transformed backups to improve product development cycles. Traditionally, they had constrained the size of NAS shares to limit backup/recovery exposure. The company artificially split projects into smaller pieces, which complicated the development process and irritated developers. With EMC Avamar® deduplication software and systems driving an order of magnitude performance transformation, they can now share all project data on one central share— which drives productivity. In our last example, a retail organization is using transformed backups to improve customer profiling and accelerate business. Historically, all database backups ran through the backup team. The DBAs had no visibility into whether their databases were truly recoverable, and they had to depend on the backup team to run all of the recoveries—from row to table to database. As a result, the DBAs were extraordinarily adverse to change. When the backup team offered Data Domain systems as a service for the DBAs to run their own backups, the entire culture changed. The team was confident in their ability to protect and recover the databases. They became more aggressive at implementing database changes—which then enabled them to better analyze customer data, which improved their business.

You put backup clients on application servers that send data to media servers that then sends that data to tape. There are big problems with this. It’s expensive. You send all the data through media servers, then to tape. As applications get bigger and need to run 24 x 7, this becomes a problem. Backup slows down and you have protection risk. Plus in this model, the data is put in proprietary formats, locking users into a particular vendor’s solution. There’s also too many moving parts. There’s too many phone calls to install clients. Then calls to move it to tape. Then calls to have it transported offsite. Just too many moving parts. With disk everywhere and new backup tools provided by applications, storage, and hypervisors, data owners can now do their own backups as they seek faster, easier backup. The data owners also want more visibility. Backup is critical to their success. But they wonder why they have more visibility into their personal data backup than the business data they manage. They want to know where their app or VM data is – and it’s status. They need that comfort, that safety net in order for them to drive their plans forward – and lower their “time-to”.

Most want to jump from phase 1 to phase 4. You start by going through phase 2 and 3 – showing you can do backups more efficiently and reliability. The key is picking the right disk platform. Our solution here is EMC Avamar. It can move backup data to Avamar Data Store or Data Domain. Let’s take a high-level look at how Avamar works. Avamar starts by dividing data into sub-file segments. It compresses them and applies a unique hash identifier to each one. Then it can determine if that segment has been previously backed up or whether it‘s unique and should now be backed up. If the data has been backed up previously, then Avamar will not back it up again. With Avamar, you’ll “never back up the same data twice.” On top of that, Avamar routinely reduces data by up to 99 percent before backing it up. The data that is truly new and unique is sent across the network compressed, which again helps with bandwidth management on both backups and recoveries. The vStorage API approach involves creating VMware snapshots of a VM, and presenting them to the virtual proxy host—which runs in a separate VM. VMware shows Avamar a list of changed blocks from the proxy, and Avamar will break these changed blocks into variable length segments to determine which specific segments are unique, and then sends only those new segments to the Avamar Data Store. You will like this approach because it moves the backup process away from the VMs where your applications are running. As you can imagine this is purposely designed to avoids performance impact. The Avamar agent is automatically installed on the proxy host where it runs your backups from there to an Avamar Data Store. Because of VMware advancements, including the ability to run the proxy server in a VM and to dynamically “hot-add” volumes to that proxy without physically moving data across the network, Avamar is able to backup large VMs, as can be deployed in the Vblock, in just minutes. Now let’s take a look at the standard restore process. You can see in the slide that, in the old days, prior to the Avamar 6.0 release, the recovery process simply restored either the full file, if in a Windows operating system, or the full VMDK image. But today, Avamar tracks the delta of changed blocks to speed recovery by restoring only unique elements required to rebuild the file, folder, or VMDK requested—resulting in much faster restores. This is different from most backup applications that require at least a periodic full backup. You can see that Avamar can process the changed blocks identified by VMware into a new fully recoverable image on an ongoing basis. And just as in physical environments, Avamar’s deduplicated replication of protected VMDK files allows for network-efficient disaster recovery—and importantly, greater flexibility in how you can whether to the original VM or to a new location. One feature that you will especially like is the ability to do one backup, and with Avamar, you have the option of a bare-metal restore OR a more granular file-level recovery. This is all automatic and transparent, simplifying the management of VM backup. You’ll notice that this feature is especially important in a highly virtualized environment, where VM density continues to grow, and client-side optimization is paramount to sustained backup performance. As you can see, Avamar can load balance jobs across virtual proxy servers to assure that individual proxies are not overtaxed. This proxy-to-host-to-VM relationship is dynamic, so performance can be sustained without impacting the production environment. Jobs can also be directed to available proxies to handle high-priority workloads. Universal proxy-server load balancing helps drive down costs by having fewer proxies to manage in your VSPEX/virtual environment. VMware vCenter Server

With Avamar, you can access vCenter Server directly from the Avamar user interface. New virtual machines are automatically discovered and displayed, so that administrators can apply an appropriate backup policy. Then VMs can be sorted so that their current backup status can be assessed. Health Quest is a healthcare company in the Hudson Valley of New York with two data centers and 210 virtual machines. The company was using competitive backup solution (Symantec BackupExec) and tape. The company had started to increase its virtualization, but backups began to take more than 12 hours. With frequent failures and downtime, concerns began to rise. Restores were also very long and inconsistent as tape did not provide a reliable medium. Health Quest placed its virtualization project on hold until it could redesign its backup processes. Avamar was chosen and deployed, which eliminated tape and saved a projected $1 million over three years. Initially the company saw a 96 percent reduction in backup data and has been able to continue its virtualization project and increase the VM-to-ESX ratio. They have not only reduced their backup windows significantly, but can provide much improved service level agreements. Health Quest issued a success story and press release. In particular, we’re going to focus on our integration with Oracle through Data Domain (represented as protection storage in the slide). In many – or most – Oracle environments, the database admin wants control of Oracle backup and recovery. If not managed correctly, this can result in silo’d backup infrastructures and inefficiency overall. What we’ve been talking about all along. Through Data Domain integration with Oracle RMAN (via Data Domain Boost software) we enable control by the DBA, while the backup team retains control the storage. This is done through DD Boost software. DD Boost is available natively with Oracle RMAN or with leading backup applications including NetWorker and Avamar. What does it all mean? Again, it provides choice. You have the option to offer full DBA control of Oracle backup, recovery and replication – or you can continue to manage Oracle backups. But in either case, the Oracle data goes to a common deduplication (protection) storage. Both the DBA team and the Backup team benefit, as DBAs can have the control they want, while you the backup team maintain ultimate control of the infrastructure. And of course, there no silos. First, it’s important to note that Saint Charles, a health system provider in Oregon state in the United States, is using the combination of Avamar and Data Domain to protection 400 Virtual Machines. Their backups have been ten times faster with their newly integrated Avamar and Data Domain system solution than with their previous system, saving them precious operational time and overcoming the challenges they faced in protecting their VMware environment. So a great example of our integrated backup software and storage driving tremendous value. Also, they used Data Domain and RMAN to provide the Oracle DBA team with full control of their database backups. What was happening: the Oracle DBAs were doing backups to local disk then expecting the backup team to swap to tape. It wasn’t working so well. Saint Charles changed this by having the DBA teams doing it directly from RMAN to Data Domain. This had a great impact – backups were running much, much faster. Exchange Granular Level Recovery (GLR) allows virtually mounting and browsing of saveset Exchange databases for mailbox level recoveries in minutes. By having this Granular mailbox recovery it also reduces the number of backups, time, and cost required to protect Exchange. Unique to Avamar, is federated backup support for Exchange Server 2010 Database Availability Groups . With Avamar Federated Backups, customers can set a preferred Exchange DAG server list, and Avamar will check each Exchange DAG server in the order selected. This allows Avamar to be flexible for Exchange Server 2010 DAG backups. If databases are migrated to alternate servers or if the active/passive role of a specific database copy changes, Avamar will automatically recognize the new DAG database locations and roles, continue backups based upon the users preferences. Recovery of SharePoint starts with farm-level backup. We use the SharePoint VSS interface to obtain information about a SharePoint farm. This information includes the servers in the farm, and where configuration, content and search databases and files are located. This information is used to take a complete backup of the farm, one that can be used to recover the complete farm, individual servers in the farm, search, content databases, or granular site level content. We have multiple levels of SharePoint disaster recovery, from recovery of a complete farm, individual servers in the farm, search, and content databases. A single SharePoint farm level backup can be used for any of these recovery scenarios.

Let’s review why archiving matters to the world of IT. First, archiving enhances efficiency. Let’s look at Exchange 2010 and SharePoint 2010 migrations as examples. Why migrate old, stale, infrequently accessed data? This information needs to be kept in compliance with corporate and/or regulatory mandates, but that doesn’t mean it needs to occupy Tier 1 storage ! Then there are PST files and mailbox quotas. If data is being centrally archived and managed, PST files are no longer needed and with archive and shortcut of data out of the primary storage device, people won’t hit their quotas and experience the inability to send or receive data. Additionally, this first tier storage can be freed up for current information without having to purchase additional storage. There’s also inactive SharePoint site archives and active storage management issues. Plus archiving can help with system performance enhancements. Bottom line, it’s all about the end user and making sure that they can be productive in their jobs. When it comes to eDiscovery, you need to have rapid response to legal actions or HR inquiries, and you need to search and be responsive without spoliation, which is intentional or negligent withholding, hiding, altering, or destroying of evidence relevant to a legal proceeding. Finally, compliance. You need to deal with corporate policies and lifecycle management, and if you’re in a regulated industry, there’s a host of rules you have to comply with.
