Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe in der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft MIPAS-STR IMK-Seminar 7 Oktober 20056 Preliminary conclusions (27 April 2005) Zenith measurements successful (improved deep-space calibration) Telemetry: up- and downlink: successful, but improvement needed for SCOUT Various other changes (heaters etc.) worked excellent (tropics !!) Despite various ‘logistical’ problems (extremely short preparation phase in Aracatuba) and inherent problems with clouds we have obtained good measurements at the time of the Envisat overpass. 2nd shutter for zenith measurements

21
Page 21 TROCCINOX Science Meeting, Aracatuba, 17 February 2005 Motivation for validation in the tropics F Interesting region for science, thus accurate satellite data needed F Measurements from Satellite difficult because Low temperatures at the tropopause Relatively high vertical resolution required
22
Page 22 TROCCINOX Science Meeting, Aracatuba, 17 February 2005 Why aircraft measurements for Envisat validation F Envisat is in a polar sun synchronous orbit F Equator crossing time : 10 and 22 hrs local time F Distance between two orbits about 3000 km F Aircraft can carry a large payload for - internal validation - measurement of complementary species

F B – C: a few limb scans after the dive; channel 2 only; Thin clouds at the lower tangent heights (8 and 9 km); F C – A : 10 + 1 limb scans (in between non-linearity measurements) ; channel 2 only Thin clouds at the lower tangent heights (8 and 9 km) F Overpass 12:48 UTC at C “cloud free”

Page 43 TROCCINOX Science Meeting, Aracatuba, 17 February 2005 Conclusions F During the complete flight clouds were in the field of view of the MIPAS-STR instrument and of course also in that of MIPAS-Envisat, except in the last section F The last section was cloud free even at the 8 km tangent point and will be extremely useful for MIPAS-Envisat validation
