Modal Verbs Definition: A modal verb (also ' modal ',' modal auxiliary verb ', ' modal auxiliary') is a type of auxiliary verb that is used to indicate likelihood, ability, permission, and obligation. Examples include the English verbs can/could, may/might, must, will/would, and shall/should. For Example: What is the difference in tone between the two sentences: I would like an ice cream. I want an ice cream. German Modal Verbs are möchten (would like), wollen (want), sollen (should), können (can), müssen (must), dürfen (may), mögen (like).
Modal Verbs Modal Verbs have similar properties. Modal verbs are conjugated the same for ich and er/sie/es Conjugation for ich, du, and er/sie/es is irregular. Conjugation for Sie, sie, ihr, wir follows normal conjugation patterns. Modal verbs are always conjugated and in 2 nd position in a sentence. Modal verbs usually require a second verb in the sentence. The second verb is kicked to the end of the sentence. Example: Ich möchte ein Eis essen. Er möchte einen Kaffee trinken. Wir möchten Shopping gehen.
