3 As you know the proper Future Tense is formed with the verb ‘werden’ plus the infinitive at the end of the sentence. There are, however, other ways of referring to the future – let’s have a look!

4 INFINITIVE Sport treiben Ich werde in Zukunft mehr Sport treiben Ich
(I will do more sport in future) Ich möchte in Zukunft mehr Sport treiben (I would like to do more sport in future) Ich will in Zukunft mehr Sport treiben (I want to do more sport in future)

7 The proper Future Tense is formed in the same way as you would construct a sentence using a modal verb, (e.g. I would like to…, I want to.., I have to…. etc.). Just replace ‘Ich werde’ with e.g. ‘Ich möchte’ or ‘Ich will’ and you’ve done it. Now have a look at this:

30 INFINITIVE weniger Alkohol trinken Ich sollte in Zukunft trinken Ich
(I should drink less alcohol in future) Ich habe beschlossen in Zukunft weniger Alkohol zu trinken (I have decided to drink less alcohol in future)

31 So what’s new? In sentences using the proper Future Tense or Modal verbs you simply add an infinitive at the end. However, if you form a sentence with verbs like ‘versuchen’, ‘hoffen’, ‘vorhaben’ etc. you need to insert a ‘zu’ in front of the infinitive. Just like you do in English as well! I hope to eat more salad and fruit
