5 Auf Deutsch Modal auxiliary verbs are called modal verbs, or simply modals. There are 6 modal verbs in German. The möchte-forms, would like, are the first you will learn. Ich möchte ein Glas Wasser trinken. I would like to drink a glass of water. Ich möchte ein Glas Wasser. I would like a glass of water. Möchtest du eine Cola trinken? Would you like to drink a cola?

6  Notice that in German, that the modal verb and the main verb are separated.  The modal verb (like other conjugated verbs) is in the normal verb position, while the main verb is used at the end of the sentence.  You can also use the modal by itself, without a main verb.

12 Auf Deutsch  All German nouns have a gender; masculine, feminine, neuter.  A pronoun that replaces a German noun must be the same gender as the noun. In these sentences the pronouns are the subject of the sentence. Herr Gärtner ist nicht alt.Er ist nicht alt. Frau Weigel ist fünfzig.Sie ist fünfzig. Der Schreibtisch ist neu.Er ist neu.
