The Seven Main Sentences T refers to the German version appearing in the Routledge edition of the Ogden translation; P to the Prototractatus, an early manuscript version of Tractatus. O refers to the Ogden translation, and P &M to that of Pears and McGuinness. Alt is a loose nontechnical rendering, not intended to be literal.

1. T: Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist. P: Die Welt ist alles was der Fall ist. O: The world is everything that is the case. P & M: The world is all that is the case. Alt: The world is everything, i.e., what is the case.

2. T: Was der Fall ist, die Tatsache, ist das Bestehen von Sachverhalten. P: Was der Fall ist, die Tatsache, ist das Bestehen von Sachverhalten. O: What is the case, the fact, is the existence of atomic facts. P&M: What is the case a fact is the existence of states of affairs. Alt: What is the case, the fact, is the obtaining of circumstances.

3. T: Das logische Bild der Tatsachen ist der Gedanke. P: Das logische Bild der Tatsachen ist der [Satz struck out] Gedanke. O: The logical picture of the facts is the thought. P & M: A logical picture of facts is a thought. Alt: Thought is a logical picture of facts.

O: Propositions are truth-functions of elementary propositions. (An elementary proposition is a truth-function of itself.) P & M: A proposition is a truth-function of elementary propositions. (An elementary proposition is a truth-function of itself.) Alt: Sentences are truth functions of elementary sentences. (Elementary sentences are truth functions of themselves.)

6. T: Die allgemeine Form der Wahrheitsfunktion ist: [p, ξ, N (ξ)]. Dies ist die allgemeine Form des Satzes. P: Die Allgemeine Form der Wahrheitsfunktion ist: | N(p0), α, N(α) | [displayed] O: The general form of truth-function is: [p, ξ, N (ξ)]. This is the general form of proposition. P & M: The general form of a truth-function is [p, ξ, N (ξ)]. This is the general form of a proposition. Alt: The common form of truth function is[p, ξ, N (ξ)] This is the common form of sentences.

7. T: Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen. P: Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen. [Does not appear on the opening manuscript page with the other main sentences. Nor does it appear at the end.] O: Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent. P & M: What we cannot speak about we must pass over in silence. Alt: What you cant talk about, you have to keep quiet about.
