Concept One: Gender All nouns in German have a gender… masculine feminine neutral There is no quick and easy rule for which noun is which gender. You just have to learn the gender marker…the article…with the noun.

Masculine words have der for an article. Feminine words have die. Neutral words have das. All plural words have die, regardless of their original gender. der Kulidie Blumedas Kinddie Kinder der Schuhdie Musikdas Linealdie Schuhe

Accusative Case When a sentence has a direct object (something or someone which directly receives the action), the accusative case must be used. (Refer to directions for using the Accusative Case for further information.) Der goes to den and the rest stay the same. That line sets the pattern for accusative masculine…den, einen, deinen…see the pattern? Accusative masculine takes –en. Keep this in mind for later!

Concept Two: In English, we just stick an adjective in front of the noun and call it good. In German, its almost that easy… Most adjectives need an –e added to the end of them when we use them in a sentence. alt Die alte Frau ist meine Oma. blau Das blaue Heft ist nicht hier. kleine Ich liebe das kleine Kind.

Check out the chart: nominativeaccusative masculine-e-en feminine-e-e neutral-e-e plural-en-en There are three times that you have to add an –en instead of just an –e. masculine accusative plural nominative plural accusative

The only change is that when describing a plural word or a masculine word that requires the accusative case, you add an –en ending instead of an –e ending on the adjective. (Remember the general rule for accusative masculine… -en!) Der alte Mann hat den neuen Kuli. Die nette Frau kauft den blauen Bücher. Meine kleinen Kinder haben viele netten Freunden.

Du bist dran! Its your turn! Der rot__ Apfel schmeckt gut! Ich esse den rot__ Apfel. Die rot__ Äpfel schmecken gut! Ich esse die rot__ Äpfel.

Der rote Apfel schmeckt gut! Ich esse den roten Apfel. Die roten Äpfel schmecken gut! Ich esse die roten Äpfel. The information contained in this document may not be duplicated or distributed without the permission of the owner. © Michelle L. Ishmael Wright, July 2013
