1 Reflexive Verbs

2 What is a reflexive verb?
It is a verb that we do to ourselves. Eg: we wash ourselves; we shower ourselves etc It is more common in German than in English. Eg: sich verstehen mit (to get on with)

3 How do we form a reflexive verb?
In the infinitive all reflexive verbs take the ‘sich’ pronoun, eg: sich duschen When conjugating the verb you must also decline the reflexive pronoun.

ich – mich du – dich er – sich sie – sich es – sich man - sich wir – uns ihr – euch sie – sich Sie - sich

5 Word order in main clauses
The conjugated verb is second idea as usual. The reflexive pronoun follows the conjugated verb directly. Following a modal verb, the reflexive verb goes to the end of the clause in the infinitive.The reflexive pronoun follows the modal verb directly. Eg: ich will mich später duschen.

6 Word order in subordinate clauses
The conjugated verb goes to the end of the clause. The reflexive pronoun follows the subject pronoun. Eg: weil ich mich mit meinem Bruder verstehe With modal verbs the main verb is in the infinitive directly before the modal verb at the end of the clause. Eg: weil ich mich mit ihm verstehen will.

7 Dative pronouns In some instances the reflexive pronoun is not the direct object of the verb. This is when the pronoun is in the dative case. Eg: sich die Zähne putzen or sich verletzen (to injure oneself) Only the ich and du forms of the pronoun are different in the dative case: mir and dir.

8 Examples of reflexive verbs in the dative case
Ich habe mir das Bein gebrochen Er putzt sich die Zähne Wäscht du dir die Haare? Mein Kopf tut mir weh Sie hat sich den Arm verletzt.
