‘um….zu’ and ‘weil’ sentences Jugendliche nehmen Drogen, cool sein Jugendliche nehmen Drogen, um cool zu sein (young people take drugs in order TO be cool) Jugendliche nehmen Drogen. Sie wollen cool sein Jugendliche nehmen Drogen, weil sie cool sein wollen (young people take drugs because THEY want to be cool)

‘um… zu’ versus ‘weil’ – what is the difference? The ‘um…zu’ sentence has no subject! The ‘um…zu’ sentence always has an INFINITIVE at the end!! The infinitive is preceded by ‘zu’ The ‘weil’ clause always has a subject – here: sie (they) The conjugated verb (here: wollen) goes to the end of the sentence!!

Schreibe auf Deutsch: 1. Young people take drugs in order to be cool. 2. Young people take drugs in order to escape reality. 3. Young people take drugs because they want to rebel against the parents. 4. Young people take drugs because they don’t want to be an outsider. 5. Young people take drugs because they want to be in high ‘spirits’ and in order to be accepted in the group of friends. 6. I think that young people take drugs in order to be like the others and because they want to forget the problems of everyday life.
