Im Präsens und in der Vergangenheit Konjunktiv I und II Im Präsens und in der Vergangenheit

Konjunktiv I = Indirekt Rede Indirect or reported speech is the format we use for reporting what someone else has said in our own speech or writing, without quoting it in the exact original form: Direct speech: She said: “I have written the letter” Indirect speech: She said that she had written the letter.

Konjunktiv I = Indirekt Rede Note with the examples on the previous slide: The lack of quotation marks The change from 1st person speaking to third person The change of tense (“I have written the letter” turns to “she had written the letter”) The introduction of “that”

Konjunktiv I = Indirekt Rede The good news is that Konjunktiv I is regular for all German verbs, with the single exception of ‘sein’. So even irregular verbs behave according to this regular pattern, and don’t have any vowel changes in this case.

What is this pattern you speak of?

What is this pattern you speak of? Notice how the stem of the infinitive is taken, and certain endings are added to each stem. ich spiele wir spielen du spielest ihr spielet er/sie/es spiele Sie/sie spielen

zum Beispiel Sie sagt, sie schlafe. She says she’s sleeping. Er sagte, sie gehe ins Einkaufszentrum. He said she’s going to the mall. Du sagtest, Mutter sei weg! You said mom is away!

He said I should go. She said she can dance if she wants. Die Lehrerin sagt, ich dürfe es haben. The teacher says I may have it.

Exercises Put the following sentences into the subjunctive I form!
