Berliner Pfannkuchen A Berliner Pfannkuchen (Berliner for short) is a traditional German pastry similar to a doughnut with no central hole, made from sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil, with a marmalade or jam filling and usually icing, powdered sugar or conventional sugar on top. They are sometimes made with chocolate, champagne, custard, mocha, or advocaat filling, or with no filling at all. The yeast dough contains a good deal of eggs, milk and butter. The classical Pfannkuchen made in Berlin consists of two halves filled, stuck together and deep-fried in lard, whereby the distinctive bright bulge occurs. The filling is related to the topping: for plum-butter, powdered sugar; for raspberry, strawberry and cherry jam, sugar; for all other fillings, sugar icing, sometimes flavoured with rum. Today the filling usually is injected with a large syringe or pastry bag after the dough is fried in one piece. Today Berliners can be purchased throughout the year, though they were traditionally eaten to celebrate on New Year's Eve (Silvester) as well as the carnival holidays (Rosenmontag and Fat Tuesday). A common German practical joke is to secretly fill some Berliners with mustard instead of jam and serve them together with regular Berliners without telling anyone.

Objective Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of verbs with prepositions with a 75% accuracy rate and use the Da compounds in complete sentences.

Order of Events 1.Da compounds Pg. 174 #25

Da-compounds When you use pronouns after prepositions in German, the pronoun must refer to a person or animal. Ex. Hast du den Hund gesehen? Nein, ich sorge mich aber um ihn. Telefonieren Sie heute mit Frau Schwarz? Ja, ich telefoniere mit ihr.

Da-compounds If the pronoun refers to a thing or abstract concept, German uses the preposition preceded by da- (or dar- for prepositions beginning with vowels: auf, an, in, and so forth). The prepositions ohne, außer, and seit cannot form da-compounds.

Da-compounds Ex. Wartet ihr auf den Bus? Ja, wir warten schon seit zehn Minuten darauf. Freust du dich auf da Wochenende? Ja, ich freue mich sehr darauf.

Da-compounds You can use da-compounds to introduce subordinate clauses when the verb in the main sentence requires a verb/preposition combination. Ex. Ich schrieb darüber, was ich auf meiner Reise machte.
