Explanations and Classwork Practice Modalverben Explanations and Classwork Practice

Modalverben Modalverben wollen = to want….. sollen = should….  Modal verbs are helping verbs that combine with another main verb in one sentence or clause. Their meaning tells us about the speaker’s attitude or feelings regarding the action of the verb: Do you want to read a book? Should you read the book? Do you have to read the book? The modal verb will be conjugated to match the subject and goes in the 2nd position of the sentence. The main verb will be an infinitive (unconjugated verb ending in –en) at the very end of the sentence.  Look at the following examples: I want to go to the movie theater on the weekend. Ich will am Wochenende ins Kino gehen. I should do my homework on the weekend. Ich soll am Wochenende meine Hausaufgaben machen. I would like to eat at a restaurant this weekend. Ich möchte am Wochenende in einem Restaurant essen. Modalverben wollen = to want….. sollen = should…. möchten = would like…. mögen = to like (no main verb)

ein gutes Restaurant / finden / ich / für meinen Geburtstag / will I want to find a good restaurant for my birthday.

gehen / Apsen’s / du / sollst / zu Aspen’s gehen. You should go to Aspen’s.

dort (=there) / Was / ich / soll / essen / ? What should I eat there?

du / bestellen(=order) / das Hähnchen/ sollst You should order the chicken.

ich / nicht / Hähnchen/ mag I don’t like chicken.

mag / Schweinesfleisch / ich/ auch nicht I also don’t like pork.

Ja, / Rindfleisch / ich/ liebe Yes, I love beef.

sollst / das Steak mit Spargel / du / probieren You should try the steak with asparagus.

Make this dialogue your own! You will be working with your 3 o’clock partner and changing/adding to this dialogue to make it your own. What to change: Replace the bolded words in each sentence. Ex: Ich will für meinen Geburtstag ein gutes Restaurant finden. Erase für meinen Geburtstag and replace it with……….für_________ or für __________ Then make your own suggestions based on what they are looking for and like/don’t like… What to add at the bottom: After Student B recommends a dish, Student A has to ask Student B 3 questions about the restaurant, for example: Is it expensive? Where is it? How is the atmosphere (die Stimmung)? How is the service? (die Bedienung)?
