Silent Brick Library used for POC Controller und Extension Shelfs: Controller 80/120 TB Connection via FC – VTL Mode Extension Shelf 224/336 TB Silent Brick Archivmedia: 12 disks per Brick Security with Erasure Coding 24 TB brutto Capacity SILENT BRICK SYSTEM und ich speichere Ihre Daten aus Backup- und Archivanwendungen kostenoptimiert, besonders sicher und unerreicht flexibel. Daten, die auf meinen Silent Bricks liegen, verfügen über eine integrierte Datensicherung, so dass die darauf gespeicherten Daten nicht zusätzlich über die herkömmlichen Backups gespeichert werden müssen. SILENT BRICK, ein stabiler Storage-Container mit 12 Festplatten, die über Erasure Coding geschützt sind. So können bis zu 4 Festplatten gleichzeitig ausfallen, ohne dass Daten verloren gehen. Meine Kapazität beträgt brutto 12 oder 24 TB. CONTROLLER, der die Dinge zusammenhält. Mit meinen 5 Slots für Silent Bricks stelle ich bis zu 60 oder sogar 120 TB (je nach Größe der Silent Bricks) Bruttokapazität zur Verfügung. EXTENSION SHELF, mit dem man das SILENT BRICK SYSTEM fast unbegrenzt erweitern kann. Meine 14 Slots bieten Platz für bis zu 168 bzw. 336 TB Bruttokapazität. Mit dem Controller und weiteren Shelves bin ich per SAS-Loop verbunden, was nicht nur schnell, sondern auch automatisch ausfallsicher ist.

Test Results Funktionality: Reboot neccessary after changing drive or library parameters Watermarks with Spectralogic Emulation ok Import or export of new Bricks is al little bit tricky, but works good Media powerless, if not in a drive Loadund Spin-UP of a drive/media < 5 seconds No restrictions compared to a „classic“ Tape Library => System passed qualification from FAST LTA for Oracle HSM Software Im Laufe des Tests hat sich herausgestellt, dass bei umkonfigurationen der Library ein Reboot des Server bzw. die Silent Brick durchgebootet werden muss. Dies betrifft Konfigurationen bzgl. Tape-LW und der Library selbst. Da dies eher selten Vorkommt, stell das vermutlich keine Einschränkung dar. Anfänglich Probleme wie z.B. falsch angezeigte Tape-Füllstände sind seit dem Umstieg auf Spectra Library mit IBM Tape Laufwerken gelöst. Offen ist aktuell noch der Punkt des Importierens neuer Medien (Bricks). Dies funktioniert aktuell nur mit Zuhilfenahme der Shell. Fügt man eine Brick aus dem Bestand in eine virtuelle Library, wird diese automatisch in einen freien Slot eingelegt. SAM-FS erwartet ein neues Medium allerdings im „export slot“. Legt man den Brick dann mittels Shell in den „export slot“ lässt sich das Band wie gewohnt und erwartet in SAM-FS importieren. Ein export/import Test eines Brick hat Fehlerfrei funktioniert.

Test Results Performance: Test 1: Library with 4 drives noch 3 aktiv noch 2 aktiv noch 1 aktiv alle aus Test 1: 2 Libraries with 4 drives each Test1 1 Library nur einem FC Port zuzuordnen! Die vorhandene Anbindung mit einmal 8GB FC erlaubt einen maximalen Durchsatz von 800MB pro Sekunde. Die verwendete Quelldatei war 40GB groß und wurde aus dem Hauptspeicher gelesen und auf „Band“ geschrieben. Dies passierte in einer Endlossschleife. Test 2 Definiert waren 2 Librarys. Jeweils eine über einen FC-Port. Library 1 mit den Laufwerken 901, 902, 903 und 904. Die Library 2 wurde mit den Laufwerke 950, 951, 952 und 953 definiert. Random Files. Nichts aus dem Cache.Lesen vom RAM und direkt auf die tapes File aus /dev/random in RAM-Filesystem gelegt. 40 GB Größe. noch 7 aktiv noch 6 aktiv noch 5 aktiv noch 4 aktiv noch 3 aktiv noch 2 aktiv noch 1 aktiv alle aus

Conclusion Pro‘s: Very fast media load Tape-Handling with Disk-Performance Low power consumption compared to disk archive High data integrity on one media – Ausfall bis zu 4 Disks ok. Dynamic allignment of tapedrives (VTL) Random access very performant (less seektime, loads, unloads) Silent Brick Drive in branch office 10 years lifetime minimum German company, own development of HW and SW, fast access to engineering, fast modification for requests Con‘s: More expensive than Tape, but cheapter than Diskarchive Capacity loss per Brick (4 Disks), 2 Disk Redundancy in work… RFE Restricted scalability if more than 4 drives needed (currently) Online currently 2,3 PB netto per Silent Brick Controller Max. Bandwith per Library limited by FC (800 MB with 8Gb FC) LTO-7 hat  6TB (15TB komprimiert) x 10500 Slots in SL8500 = 61 PB
