3 Cognates Here are some hobbies. Some are cognates of English words; some are near cognates. What do they mean? das Tennis die Gymnastik der Basketball die Karten das Golf das Schwimmen das Rugby die Gitarre das Hockey All nouns directly derived from infinitive verbs (e.g. das Swimmen, das Reiten) are neuter and so have das as the definite article. The sports above have been given with their articles, although they are very rarely used with them in written or spoken German. You may therefore feel that it is approproate to delete them. For example: Ich spiele gern Rugby. Rugby ist mein Lieblingshobby. der Fußball die Trompete
