When referring to past time in conversation, the German most often uses the present perfect tense, often referred to as the conversational past. Auf Deutsch

Most past participles have the prefix ge-. Past participles of weak verbs end in –t, the past participles of strong verbs end in -en (some in –n), and often they have a vowel change. Since you cannot predict what the change will be, you must memorize the past participles of strong verbs. For most weak verbs: use the third-person singular form with the prefix ge. Verbs ending in –ieren do not use the prefix ge-; the past participle is identical to the third-person singular, present tense.
