der Nominativ Ask for: “wer” or “was” The subject is always in the nominative. Der Lehrer (subject) ist streng. Wo ist der Stift (subject) ? The object is in nominative when in combination with the verbs “sein”, “werden”, “heißen” and “bleiben”. Das ist (sein) ein Buch (object) . Tina wird (werden) eine Lehrerin (onject).

der Dativ Ask for: “wem” Most prepositions demand the dative. (zu, bei, mit,...) Anna ist bei ihrer Mutter (dative). Wir kommen mit dem Auto (dative). The prepositions “in”, “auf” and “an” demand the dative, when you can ask “where?” Das Buch ist in der Tasche (dative). Where? Max sitzt auf dem Tisch (dative). Where?

der Akkusativ Ask for: “wen” oder “was” Most verbs demand the accusative. The accusative object is also called “direct object”. It means you directly “do” something with the object. Ich höre die Musik. (direct object). Er schreibt einen Brief. (direct object). The prepositions “in”, “auf” and “an” demand the accusative, when you can ask “to where?” Ich gehe in die Schule (acc.). To where? Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch (acc.). To where?

der Dativ + der Akkusativ Some verbs demand both the dative and accusative. In such sentences there are 2 objects, an “indirect object” in dative and a “direct object” in accusative. Usually the verb show some kind of “exchange”. Sie gibt der Mutter (dative) eine Rose (accusative). Er schreibt dem Freund (dat.) einen Brief (acc.). What (acc.). do you give, take, show, help,... someone (dat.) ?
