Connectives Connectives (also sometimes called conjunctions) are words used to link two or more sentences together. Two of the most common are und (and) and aber (but). You may wish to point out the commas separating the two sentence halves. Und and aber are always preceded by a comma if there is a subject noun or pronoun in the second sentence half. Sentences such as Ich habe eine Katze und einen Hund and Wollen Sie Wein oder Bier? do not need commas. In these examples, und and aber have been used to link two separate sentences. Und is used to link two equal sentences – both positive or both negative. Aber is used to link a positive sentence to a negative one.

Denn / oder / sondern denn = because oder = or sondern = rather / but Like und and aber, these connectives do not change the word order of either sentence. These connectives are always preceded by commas. Sondern is used to link a negative first sentence to a positive second sentence. The clauses that contain the connectives are subordinate clauses. Their word order is often different to the main clause, and is determined by the connective used.
