However, to date, Microsoft has yet to take advantage of the enviable positions it has in the BI market, including: • The Microsoft OS platform holds a dominant position in the BI market, and it is used in more than 83 percent of BI deployments. • Integration with desktop productivity applications is one of the top-five BI product selection factors, and Microsoft Office "owns" the desktop applications market. • SQL Server, coupled with its integrated Data Transformation Services and Analysis Services, is continuing to gain credibility as a platform for data mart, data warehouse and online analytical processing implementations. • Excel is a front-end reporting and analysis tool that is widely used by knowledge workers, and all of the leading BI tools vendors offer add-ins of their products for Excel. • The Microsoft Business Solutions applications from Great Plains and Navision will continue to require BI tools and capabilities to be competitive against the other enterprise application vendors. Although this is not significant to the BI market in general, it is significant as the number of Microsoft Business Solutions users grows. • Microsoft is identified as one of the top BI vendor names recognized in our surveys. The most recent version of the OLAP Report, an independent industry analysis begun in 1994 by author Nigel Pendse and often cited by vendors and analysts, states that Microsoft had bested Hyperion Solutions Corp., taking the top position in the $3 billion OLAP market in 2002. That report also states that Oracle has slipped out of the category of top five OLAP vendors. Preliminary figures show that Microsoft grabbed 24.4% of the market last year, with Hyperion Solutions settling for 22.9% of the market. OLAP SURVEY- The largest vendor-independent survey of OLAP customers Competitor Information IBM Lower Performance: Microsoft’s Business Intelligence solution has been proven to provide better performance than IBM’s DB2-based BI solution. High Cost: Can cost over $100,000 per CPU, depending on the management features you choose to add on to the base product. Oracle: Downfalls: High cost, and more difficult management capabilities. SQL Server 2000 provides management, security, and business intelligence capabilities as an integrated solution at no additional cost. Oracle sells these important features as extra-charge options, and most of these features are available only with Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition. By using SQL Server as your BI solution, companies save an average of $60,000-$76,000 per CPU. Crystal Reports 8.5 / Crystal Enterprise 8.0 Downfalls: Crystal can be unstable. User interface is not intuitive and can be difficult to use. Can not export reports to Microsoft Office applications from Crystal Reports without losing formatting and content. High cost.
