Inhalt Questions How to ask a direct question Different question words and phrases Wer, was and was für Wer, wen, wem and wessen 2 of 7 © Boardworks Ltd 2016 2

Asking direct questions a. Hast du Geschwister? b. Trinkst du Kaffee? c. Haben Sie ein Auto? d. Geht er in die Disco? All the sentences above are direct questions. Match them up to their English meanings. Is he going to the disco? Do you have any brothers or sisters? Do you drink coffee? Have you got a car? d Only one verb is needed to form a direct question in German, but two verbs are used in English. Transcript: Hast du Geschwister? Trinkst du Kaffee? Haben Sie ein Auto? Geht er in die Disco? a b c How many verbs are used in the German and English forms?

Asking direct questions Forming direct questions is actually easier in German than it is in English! You simply take a statement and move the verb from second to first place. Du spielst am Computer. (You play on the computer.) Spielst du am Computer? (Do you play on the computer?) How do you turn these statements into questions? Sie schwimmen. Du siehst fern. Er hört Musik. Ihr macht die Hausaufgaben. Sie lesen Bücher. Ich darf ins Kino gehen. Schwimmen sie? Siehst du fern? Hört er Musik? Macht ihr die Hausaufgaben? Lesen Sie Bücher? Darf ich ins Kino gehen?

Asking direct questions The procedure is the same, even when there is more information per sentence: find the verb, which will be in second position, and move it to the front (first position). Turn these statements into questions. ?
