2 um... zu + infinitive um... zu... is a very useful phrase which is used with the infinitive and means in order to. In English we tend not to say in order to. Have a look at these two sentences: Im going to town to buy a book. Im going to town in order to buy a book. We are much more likely to say the first sentence as its shorter and easier. However, in German you cant do this. You have to say in order to. Ich gehe in die Stadt, um ein Buch zu kaufen. There is a comma before um.
