3 Thema 1: Die Uhrzeit Become familiar with the Neue Wörter on Seite 116 and 117. Telling Time in German is described on Seite 114. Things to remember about telling time in German: Germans use the 24 hour clock. So 1:00pm is to a German.

4 Telling Time When asking for the time use: Other words to know:
Wie viel Uhr ist es? Wie spät ist es? Other words to know: Sekunde Minute Stunde Uhr: clock / o’clock vor / nach Viertel

Es ist eins. Es ist dreizehn Uhr. 1:10 Es ist zehn (Minuten) nach eins. Es ist ein Uhr zehn. 1:15 Es ist Viertel nach eins. Es ist ein Uhr fünfzehn. 1:30 Es ist halb zwei. Es ist ein Uhr dreißig. 1:40 Es ist zwanzig vor zwei. Es ist ein Uhr vierzig. 1:45 Es ist Viertel vor zwei. Es ist ein Uhr fünfundvierzig.

6 Sprachtipp Always remember the use of the 24 hour clock.
Midnight (Mitternacht) may also be referred to as 0 (null) Uhr. Hours and minutes are separated by a period instead of a colon. (2.45)

8 Sprachtipp To find out at what time something takes place use:
Um wie viel Uhr ______________? To say at what time something takes place use: Um ein Uhr ________________.

10 Tageszeiten Words to know: Mitternacht (24.00)
Morgen (von 5.00 bis 9.00) Vormittag (von 9.00 bis 12.00) Mittag (12.00) Nachmittag – (von – 17.00) Abend (von – 22.00)

11 Sprachtipp To say this morning, this evening etc., combine heute with a period of the day: heute Morgen. Do the same with tomorrow: morgen Nachmittag. The phrase for tomorrow morning is either morgen früh or morgen Vormittag (do not use morgen Morgen) Times of day can also combine with the days of the week: Samstagabend.

12 Sprachtipp When you do something on a regular basis, use the following adverbs to express the day or the time: montags, morgens, mittags etc. In German, general time precedes specific time: Ich habe donnerstags um Uhr Chemie.

Look over the Neue Wörter on Seite 121. Listen to the dialog for Thema 3 Complete the accompanying exercises. Complete exercises 8 and 9 on Seite 122. When asking what someone has planned use: Was hast du vor? Ich gehe ins Kino.
