2 Hours and Minutes Wie spat ist es? / Wieviel Uhr ist es? What time is it? Es ist acht Uhr. It is eight o’clock. Es ist halb acht It’s 7:30. Es ist ein Uhr. It is one o’clock. Es ist viertel nacht acht. It’s 8:15. Es ist eins. It’s one (o’clock). Es ist viertel vor acht. It’s 7:45. Es ist zehn (Minuten) nach drei. It is 3:10. Es ist fünfundzwanzig nach drei. It is 3:25. Es ist fünfundzwanzig vor vier. It is 3:35.

Der Vormittag forenoon der Abend evening Der Mittag noon die Nacht night die Mitternacht midnight **All time expressions referring to days & parts of days may be used with am—with the exception of Nacht und Mitternacht! Er kommt am Donnerstag am dreiundzwanzigsten Mai, am Abend. In der Nacht ist es normalerweise kalt. Um Mitternacht musst ihr nach Hause kommen!

The months and the seasons are all masculine: Der Januar der Mai der September Der Februar der Juni der Oktober Der März der Juli der November Der April der August der Dezember Der Frühing spring der Herbst autumn, fall Der Sommer summer der Winter winter Im (the contraction of in dem) is used with the names of the months and seasons: Er ist im März hier gewesen. (He was here in March.) Sie kommt im Herbst. (She’s coming in the fall.)

11 Das Jahr, -en Years (im) In naming a specific year, German either uses (a), the full phrase im Jahr(e) plus the year or (b), it uses the year along, without a preposition! You can’t refer to years the way we do in English: in 1985 Er ist im Jahr(e) 1985 nach Frankfurt gezogen. (He moved to Frankfurt in 1985) Er ist 1985 nach Frankfurt gezogen.

15 Definite and Indefinite Time
The Germans combine words such as gestern, nachittag, morgen, abend, etc like we do! Gestern nachmittag Morgen abend **Instead of saying “this morning” or “this evening”, German says heute morgen, heute abend. Morgan Früh is the expression for tomorrow morning.

17 Accusative case for definite time when no preposition is involved!
Letzten Sommer blieb ich den ganzen Tag zu Hause. Sie fährt nächste Woche nach Deutschland. Wir gehen jeden Winter skilaufen. Er hat uns voriges Jahr besucht. Er arbeitet den ganzen Tag!

18 Seit and Auf Seit: this word is used with the present tense if the time expression refers to something that began in the past and is still going on. Seit einem Jahr: refers to a year already past. Auf ein Jahr: refers to a year yet to come. Ich wohne seit einem Jahr in Deutschland. (The year is behind me.) Ich fahre auf ein Jahr nach Deutschland. (The year is ahead of me!) Er wohnt seit einer Woche hier. (He’s been living here for a week.) Sie wohnt seit 10 Jahren in Utah. (She’s been living in Utah for 10 years now)
