COMMANDS imperative There are three command forms: formal familiar singular familiar plural

formal command form This command is formed by simply reversing the word order. Like in a question, the command begins with the Verb: (Get/Climb in!) Steigen Sie ein! (Don't do that!) Machen Sie das nicht! (Call me!) Rufen Sie mich an!

familiar command form - singular Is formed by using the verb stem by itself: (Get/Climb in!) Steig ein ! (Don't do that!) Mach das nicht! (Call me!) Ruf mich an!

familiar command form - plural Take the verb stem and add -t (Get in!) Steigt ein! (Don't do that!) Macht das nicht! (Call me!) Ruft mich an!

familiar command form – stem –d/-t Verbs with stems ending in –t, -d, add an -e: (familiar singular – Work!) Arbeite ! (familiar plural – Work!) Arbeitet !

commands – strong verbs Strong verbs with a vowel change maintain that change only in the familiar singular command form (e.g. sprechen, lesen, vergessen): (Speak louder!) Sprich lauter! (Read the book!) Lies das Buch! (Don't forget the tickets!) Vergiss die Fahrkarten nicht!

commands – strong verbs – familiar pl. Can you form the familiar plural command form of sprechen, lesen, vergessen? (Speak louder!) Sprecht lauter! (Read the book!) Lest das Buch! (Don't forget the tickets!) Vergesst die Fahrkarten nicht!

strong verbs – stem vowel="a" Strong verbs with stem vowel a are an exception. There is NO umlaut in the command forms (e.g. schlafen, fahren): (Sleep now!) Schlaf jetzt ! (Drive off now!) Fahr jetzt los!

exclamation mark / “bitte” / “doch ” for more emphasis you can add an exclamation mark: Kommt herein ! to “soften” the command you can add “bitte”: Bitte, machen Sie die Tür zu. Machen Sie die Tür zu, bitte. Machen Sie bitte die Tür zu. for more urgency you can add “doch” Ruf mich doch an.

or, of course, you might want to add all three: Ruf mich doch bitte an!

POLITE REQUESTS If the command / imperative sounds to strong (or if you are not quite sure how to form it) this form can be used as an alternative. It corresponds quite literally to the English “Would you (please) do s.th.” “Würden Sie (bitte) etwas machen.” the only difference being - as usual - that the second verb “do = machen” appears at the end of the German clause. It is in the infitive!!!

WÜRDE “würde” for those who want to know is the subjunctive form of the verb “werden”, just as “would” is the subjunctive form of “will”. It is conjugated like this (same way as "möchten"): ich würde du würdest er, sie, es würde wir würden ihr würdet sie würden

WÜRDE Now conjugate "würden on you own": ich du er, sie, es wir ihr sie würde würdest würde würden würdet würden

examples- convert to "würden" Kommen Sie herein. Würden Sie (bitte) hereinkommen. Machen Sie die Tür zu. Würden Sie die Tür zumachen, bitte Rufen Sie mich an. Bitte, würden Sie mich anrufen.

examples Kommt herein. Würdet ihr bitte hereinkommen. Macht die Tür zu. Würdet ihr die Tür zumachen, bitte. Ruft mich an. Bitte, würdet ihr mich anrufen.

examples Komm herein. Würdest du bitte hereinkommen. Mach die Tür zu. Würdest du die Tür zumachen, bitte. Ruf mich an. Bitte, würdest du mich anrufen.
