A. We are investigating 10GbE support on the Intel Modular Server through the use of a 10GbE mezz card and a 10GbE “pass-through” module (i.e. no switching). At a high-level, the 10GbE mezz card would plug into the slot on either a MFS5520VIR or King Island board, those Ethernet ports are routed directly to the 2nd Ethernet switch location in the rear of the chassis. When populated with a 10GbE pass-through module, each blade can have a direct connection to an external 10GbE switch or other server with 10GbE ports (such as a storage box). This will enable customers to take advantage of the King Island’s processing power, and also leverage your customers’ existing IT infrastructure (i.e. 10GbE switches). Note this will NOT replace the primary GbE switch (AXXSW1GB), which will still need to be populated in the 1st Ethernet switch location. How will the 10GbE components be managed through the existing IMS GUI? A. Integration into the IMS GUI is still TBD. Will the 10GbE components be compatible with Bear River? A. We are evaluating how the 10GbE components will function with Bear River. 22

Storage subsystem HA insulates VMs from storage subsystem failures by supporting two storage controller modules (SCMs) in a chassis. If you’re familiar with the IMS, then you know how easy it is to manage. We’ve taken the goodness of the IMS GUI and implemented it on rack/ped with the Intel SCS. We’ve been doing server mgt for a while now, but we haven’t made it very visual for the end-user. So what’s you’re seeing is the actual system, as configured with CPUS and DIMMs, along with any error conditions on the top. For example, if you have a DIMM error, then it will highlight the actual DIMM and call it out in the event log. It makes debugging very easy, easy enough for even a junior IT administrator. One of the things they do really well, and I struggle with it, is RAID mgt. As you’ll see when we step thru the demo, they make it super-simple with a graphical interface and easy mapping from adapter card to logical volume. 33

Pretty cool that you can watch on-demand programs, etc. This ability to see into the backup repository without ever recovering files does not exist with leading vendors. Most vendors make you pull back the files before making sure they were the right ones. A shocking number of recoveries fail. This technology allows you to virtually run a recovery in seconds without having to pull back any files so no storage required. Software such as exchange or virus software can connect to virtual view allowing you to look into the data even further before pulling back. A note on archiving or offsite backup. Typically when archiving data for many years or pulling back data offsite only select files are wanted as backing up the entire system for the entire server is too costly. Using this advanced CDP for local backup is perfect for the last couple of months and should something go wrong you can recover in seconds to minutes. Should a much more unlikely disaster hit, you still have to backup the most business critical files offsite. Acceptance at a longer restore time is acceptable in this mode as at least you are not going out of business. 34
