This PowerPoint contains: Slide 3: a recap of all main sections, with hyperlinks. Slide 4: teacher’s notes relating to the gender of countries in German. Slides 5 to 8: a map of Europe, showing the 28 countries currently part of the European Union, with their German names, the English translation and sound files. We have also added a few countries which are not part of the European Union. Slides 9 to 11: an activity to practise placing the 28 countries on a map of Europe, indicating their capital city and describing the colours of their flag. Slides 12 to 13: a recap of the main vocabulary and a revision of colours, with sound files.

4 Countries Teacher’s notes:
In German, most countries appear without an article although there are some exceptions. If a country requires an article, it normally depends on its gender. Most countries in German are gender neutral and don’t need an article. Countries with a feminine or masculine gender and the ones that are used in plural form are used with an article: DIE (feminine): die Schweiz (Switzerland), die Slowakei (Slovakia), die Türkei (Turkey) DER (masculine, there aren’t many!): der Irak (Iraq), der Iran (Iran), der Libanon (Lebanon) DIE (plural): die Niederlande (The Netherlands), die USA (The United States of America), die Bahamas (The Bahamas) DAS (exception!): das Vereinigte Königreich Großbritannien und Nordirland (The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), das Baltikum (The Baltic States) It‘s easiest to simply memorise the exceptions. As you can see on official maps (as on slides 5 and 11) the countries are indicated without an article. When you present them to your pupils, you could point to a country and say: Hier ist Deutschland, hier ist die Schweiz, hier ist das Vereinigte Königreich, hier sind die Niederlande. home
