The future

There are two (main) ways of talking about the future! You can simply use the Present Tense, e.g. German: Ich kaufe am Wochenende ein neues Handy English: I am going to buy a new mobile at the week-end or You use the proper Future Tense. Just take the correct form of the verb werden and put the infinitive at the end of the sentence. Simple!!!! German: Ich werde am Wochenende ein neues Handy kaufen English: I will buy a new mobile at the week-end

Achtung! The German Ich will does NOT mean I will! It means I want to – completely different thing altogether!

And here are the different forms of the verb werden ich werde du wirst Sie werden er/sie/es/man wird wir werden ihr werdet Sie werden sie werden I will you will he/she/it/one will we will you will (plural) you will (plural/formal) they will

As you now know the proper Future Tense is formed with the verbwerden plus the infinitive at the end of the sentence. There are, however, other ways of referring to the future – lets have a look!

kaufen INFINITIVE Ichmorgen ein Handy werdeein Handykaufen Ichmöchtemorgenein Handykaufen (I will buy a mobile tomorrow) (I would like to buy a mobile tomorrow) Ichwillmorgenein Handykaufen (I want to buy a mobile tomorrow)

The proper Future Tense is formed in the same way as you would construct a sentence using a modal verb, ( e.g. I would like to…, I want to.., I have to…. etc.). Just replace Ich werde with e.g. Ich möchte or Ich will and youve done it. Now have a look at this:

Vokabeln: Ich hoffe… Ich habe vor….. Ich habe beschlossen.. Ich werde.. Ich will.. Ich möchte.. I hope to… I intend to… I have decided to… I will.. I want to… I would like to…

kaufen INFINITIVE Ichmorgen ein Handy werdeein Handykaufen Ich habe vor morgenein Handykaufen (I will buy a mobile tomorrow) (I intend to buy a mobile tomorrow) zu

kaufen INFINITIVE Ichmorgen möchteein Handy kaufen Ich habe beschlossen morgen ein Handy kaufen (I would like to buy a mobile tomorrow) (I have decided to buy a mobile tomorrow) zu ein Handy

kaufen INFINITIVE Ichmorgen willein Handy kaufen Ich hoffe morgen ein Handy kaufen (I want to to buy a mobile tomorrow) (I hope to buy a mobile tomorrow) zu ein Handy

So whats new? In sentences using the proper Future Tense or Modal verbs you simply add an infinitive at the end. However, if you form a sentence with verbs like versuchen, hoffen, vorhaben etc. you need to insert a zu in front of the infinitive. Just like you do in English as well! I hope to buy a mobile tomorrow

Was willst du nächstes Wochenende kaufen? Say: Next week- end I want to buy new trousers at (bei) Hi Jinx. I also intend to go to the cinema in order to watch a film with Orlando Bloom. Fertig?
