This is Marlon. Marlon's parents are dead.

If Marlon's parents weren't dead, Marlon would not live alone in the streets.

This is Jason. Jason is bald.

If Jason had more hair, he would be happier.

These are Toby and Kevin. They eat unhealthy food and they are overweight.

If Toby and Kevin ate healthier food, they would lose weight.

This is Olivia. She wants to play outside but it is raining.

If the sun was shining, Olivia would play outside.

Conditional II 1.If Marlon's parents ______________, Marlon ________________ alone in the streets. 2.If Jason ___________ more hair, he _____________happier. 3.If Toby and Kevin ___________ healthier food, they __________________ weight. weren't dead would not live had would be ate would lose

We use conditional II wenn eine Bedingung genannt wird, die unwahrscheinlich oder unmöglich zu erfüllen ist. Bsp. 2: If Jason had more hair, he would be happier. Jason hat eine Glatze. Die Bedingung (mehr Haare) ist somit fast unmöglich.

Bsp. 1: If Marlon's parents weren‘t dead, Marlon would not live alone in the streets. Marlon‘s Eltern sind tot. Die Bedingung (sie sind nicht tot) ist somit nicht erfüllbar und man stellt sie sich nur vor (was wäre, wenn…)

Bsp.3: If Toby and Kevin ate healthier food, they would lose weight. Toby und Kevin essen gerade sehr viel ungesundes Essen. Die Bedingung ist daher eher nicht erfüllbar. (was wäre aber, wenn sie gesünder essen würden?)

How do you form conditional II? example: If Jason _____more hair, he __________happier. had would be If + 2nd form of the verb (simple past) + would/could + verb (infinitive)

We use a past verb but we are thinking about the present or the future! Example: If I won the lottery, I would buy a private aeroplane. (es ist in der Gegenwart und in der Zukunft eher unwahrscheinlich, dass ich im Lotto gewinne.)

Conditional I When we think about a possible situation in the future, we use: If+ verb in simple present + will + verb (infinitive) Example: If he has time, he‘ll help you.

Use of conditional I We use conditional I when we are thinking about a possible situation in the future. If Tom finishes work early, he will call Stephen. (es ist gut möglich, dass Tom früh mit der Arbeit aufhört)

Conditional II und I You can change the word order: Jason would be happier if he had more hair. If he had more hair, Jason would be happier.
