Ich wünsche, ich wäre in Deutschland. I wish I were in Germany. Es scheint, als wäre es möglich. It seems as if it would be possible. Wenn wir nur schon da wären! If only we were already there!

Regular verbs form the comparative exactly the same way as the simple past. Compare the two sets of sentences and you will see the only difference is the “t” in the verb. This is the simple past tense marker. So let’s move these over. By themselves, they are simply indicative past. They may have really happened. With the addition of “wenn wir da wären” they become subjunctive, “irreal”, they didn’t really happen. Only context can tell the whole story. The verb alone is ambiguous because it is the same form whether true past or maybe, would-be, could-be, but isn’t true present. Wir machen dasselbe. We do the same thing. Wir machten dasselbe, wenn wir da wären. Wir machten dasselbe. We did the same thing. We would do the same thing, if we were there.
