Review of Pronouns in the nominative and accusative: And now…the dative (indirect object) pronouns Review the nominative (subject) pronouns: Review the accusative (direct object) pronouns: me you him her it us you (all) them You (form) mir dir ihm ihr uns euch ihnen Ihnen me you him her it us you (all) them You (form) ich du er sie es wir ihr Sie mich dich ihn sie es uns euch Sie I you he she it we you (all) they you (form)

Don’t get possessive adjectives confused with dative pronouns: Possessive adjectives show possession: My, your, his, her, its, our, their, your (notice, not him or them) Nominative PA: M/N F/PL mein meine dein deine sein seine ihr ihre unser unsere euer eure Ihr Ihre Dative PA: m/n F PL +n meinem meiner meinen deinem deiner deinen seinem seiner seinen ihrem ihrer ihren Unserem unserer unseren Euerem eurerer eueren Ihrem ihrer ihren Ihrem Ihrer Ihren Accusative PA: M F/Pl meinen meine deinen deine seinen seine   

Review… As you have alredy learned—the direct object/accusative answers the question “what” for the verb. The indirect object receives the action indirectly from the verb—answers the question “for whom/to whom”, and in some cases, “from whom.”

Look closely at these sentences: DOA Ich kaufe eine Karte. Ich kaufe dem Freund eine Karte. Now let’s see what happens when you substitute a pronoun for the indirect object in the second sentence. Ich kaufe ihm eine Karte.  “ihm” stands for “dem Freund” IOD DOA

Ich kaufe ihm eine Karte. “ihm” stands for “dem Freund” Notice there is no change in word order, but simply a replacement of the actual word with a pronoun. BUT—notice that the word was in the DATIVE case, therefore the IOP must also be in the dative case. See the chart you copied earlier for the dative pronouns…

And now…the dative (indirect object) pronouns…again… me you him her it us you (all) them You (form) mir dir ihm ihr uns euch ihnen Ihnen Notice that inanimate objects will use the pronoun that matches their grammatical gender! This means that “dem Mann” would use “ihm”, “dem Mädchen” would use “ihm”, “der Frau” would use “ihr”, usw.
