How many of us are there? I am currently tracking 28 family branches of various sizes. There are almost 4,300 individuals in the combined trees. (2200 in 2005) We have documented about 150 individuals lost in the Holocaust. My estimate is 15,000-25,000 related family members around the world.

How does the Tree Grow? Family Member Information Online Sources Census Records Social Security Death Index Ellis Island Immigration Records Other Immigration Records Yad Vashem JewishGen.org Offline Sources Microfilms Newspapers Birth/death/Marriage Certificates Social Security Application Records

Digging and Digging Different sources produce bits and pieces I try to put the pieces together – Just like doing a jig-saw puzzle. I have the puzzle border, next I need to fill in the middle. Like the jig-saw puzzle, the trick is to connect the unknown to the known.

From the Known to the Unknown

Putting the pieces together Ze’ev Wolf Kitzes 1695-1789 ? Meshullam Zise Kitces 1828 - 1894 Banna Leider 1832 - 1882 Wolf Ozer Kitzis 1852 - 1925 Annia Markofsky 1861 - 1926 Eliezer Keces 1852 - 1936 Ida Umensky 1861 - 1934 Dina Leah Kitzes 1860 - 1936 Yankle Kiskaman 1857 - Sara Kitces 1860 - Moishe Yosef Keces 1863 - 1932 Ethel Rachel Charest 1872 - 1944 What we knew in 2005

The First Piece Six Generations from the “New Zealand” branch Ze'ev Wolf Kitzes 1695-1789 Nachman Kitzis 1725 - Israel Kitzis 1751 - Wolf Ozer Kitzis 1776 - 1801 - Abraham Yeshuah Heshel Kitzis 1826 - One of 12 children – 6 boys, 6 girls.

Data from the Moldovan Archives in Kishinev The Second Piece Data from the Moldovan Archives in Kishinev

Putting Pieces together The big tree from the archives agrees very closely with the data from the “known” tree. The Volf with all the children in the Archives is Wolf Ozer, son of Israel, direct descendent of Ze’ev Wolf.

Moldovan Archives in Kishinev Fund 75, inventory 1, folder 1377 sheet 154 v.-155 year 1848. The lists of the merchants from Kishinau: Kitces Boruh Volf (38 years) = Marva Ruhlea (34 years), Their children are: Zis (20 years) = Sovblia (20 years) Haim (9 years) Froim-Ber (2 years) Leia (17 years) Cerna (11 years) Perla (7 years) Boruh Volf is one of the sons of Volf Ozer from the Archives slide. Could this Zis and Soyblia be our Meshullam Zise and Banna?

Do the Pieces Fit? The age is right. The location is right. Is that enough?

The Next Piece Passport Application of my grandfather, Moishe Keces, from the Canadian Archives Apparently Moishe planned to return to Russia to get his family. However, they came over on their own.

Parents are “Shulin” and “Sojbija” The Clincher! Parents are “Shulin” and “Sojbija”

Abraham Yeshuah Heshel The Revised Tree Ze'ev Wolf Kitzes 1695 - 1789 Nachman Kitzis 1724 - Israel 1748 - Wolf Ozer 1779 - 1853 Bashe Sobel [Kitzis] 1781 - Chaim Nachman 1802 - Boruch 1810 - Abraham Yeshuah Heshel 1830 - Meshullam Zise Kitces 1828 - 1894 1852 - 1925 Eliezer Keces 1852 - 1936 Dina Leah 1860 - 1936 Sara 1860 - Moishe Yosef 1863 - 1932

Where to look? I tried all the US available resources without much luck Immigration records have additional information Parents names Relatives left behind Who paid for the ticket Who they are going to see. Maybe a search for everyone who came from Alexandreni, will turn up something.

Even more strangeness! Who are these people On the lines above Janchel and Dina? Why are they going to see Z. Silverman?

More Family! A brother-in-law of Z. Silverman And a brother And a cousin.

Who are these people? Sister Basca Gontar Her husband Aron Gontar Cousin David Coin

Heeere’s Zigmund… But there’s more … Arriving at Ellis Island, Aug 25, 1920 Zigmund Silverman going to 1306(?) Columbia Ave. Wife Necha Sons Smul and Suliss But there’s more …

He’s been here before. When did he arrive the first time? He is already a citizen. Naturalized 11/29/1918 in Philadelphia. He went back to get his family. When did he arrive the first time?

Zalman in 1913 When did Rose arrive? Salmon Kishkamann arriving Philadelphia, 4/1/1913 to see his cousin Yossel Brill. Leaves behind his wife Nechama Kishkamann. Just above is Ichiel Lerner and his wife Soibel, going to see her sister Rose Kishkiman When did Rose arrive?

Silverman Ita 2005 tree Yankle (Jack) Kishkaman Dina Kitces 1855 - Soichel Kiskaman Basha Solomon Russa (?) Silverman 1999 tree Somewhere between 1999 and 2005, Soichel got a husband and Ita was added. My original sources show that Moishe Traiger was married to Sara Kiskaman. I assumed that Sara was Soichel. But, she is actually another sister! So, now we have …

The Kiskaman Branch Yankle Kiskaman Dina Leah Kitzes Ita Zigmund Silverman Nellie [Silverman] Morris Josephowitz Sara Moishe G. Traiger Soibel Solomon Lerner Rose Kischkemann Max Levin Bessie Kiskiman Aron Gontar We have also found more information on Sara, and the marriage of Rosie. I am in contact with some family members on this branch, and am collecting details on their descendents.

A New Addition Goldie Gontar, age 4 days, staying with mother in the hospital.

Known to the Unknown Kishinev Archive Data Passport Application Newly found Volf Kitzes links to Known Volf Ozer Kitzes Which leads to newly found Zis son of Boruh and wife Soyblya Passport Application Known Moishe son of Meshullam and Soybila links to newly found Zis Results are A link from current families back to Rabbi Ze’ev Wolf.
