Tenses 1 The present tense LO: to understand the different translations of the German present tense and how to form verbs correctly. Tenses 1 The present tense

English 3 : German 1

There are present tense forms in English: I play ich spiele I am playing ich spiele I do play ich spiele Remember that verbs must match their subject in German and change ending accordingly. Many German verbs follow a similar pattern in the present tense to do this. These verbs are called weak (regular) verbs.

+ spielen spiel ich spiele du spielst er/sie/es spielt wir spielen How to make the verb match the subject (person or thing doing the action) in the present tense. For the present tense of weak (regular) verbs, you take off the -en/n of the infinitive (full verb) and add these endings to the “stem” to match the persons: + ich spiele du spielst er/sie/es spielt wir spielen ihr spielt Sie spielen sie spielen spielen spiel Make notes and try to learn this pattern.

Give the 3 English translations for each one: (answers on slide 6) sagen glauben Complete sentences a-g with the correct form of the verb in the orange box below: (answers on slide 7) Was ……………. du in deiner Freizeit? Carola …………… sehr laut Gitarre. …………… ihr gern diese schreckliche Musik? Heidi und Hans …………. Hausaufgaben. Den ganzen Sommer ……………. wir im Fluß. Wo ………… Sie? + fahren fahr ich fahre du fährst er/sie/es fährt wir fahren ihr fahrt How to make the verb match the subject (person or thing doing the action) in the present tense. For the present tense of strong (irregular) verbs, you take off the -en/n of the infinitive (full verb) and add the same endings to the “stem” to match the persons as for weak verbs. However, there may be a sound change in the du (second person singular) and er/sie/es (third person singular) forms. + fahren fahr ich fahre du fährst er/sie/es fährt wir fahren ihr fahrt Sie fahren sie fahren Make notes and try to learn these patterns.

This is vital for all aspects of your A level study. Learn these patterns. You will be given a “Strong verb list”. You need to learn the verbs on this list in all their different tenses. This is vital for all aspects of your A level study.

Timed challenge e.g. backen er bäckt fangen fressen helfen lassen Can you guess/work out what the third person singular (er/sie/es) of these strong verbs would be? Use the patterns you have been given to work them out. You have 3 minutes to complete the task. e.g. backen er bäckt fangen fressen helfen lassen messen schlafen sehen befehlen

fangen fressen helfen lassen messen schlafen sehen befehlen er fängt er frisst er hilft er lässt er misst er schläft er sieht er befiehlt There are 3 very common strong verbs which must be learnt as they are essential for forming other tenses in German. These are called “auxiliary verbs”. Do you know which they are? Which tenses are they used for? haben (to have) sein (to be) werden (to become)

haben sein werden ich du er/sie/es wir ihr Sie sie Using your strong verb list, “conjugate” the 3 auxiliary (helping) verbs. Write these out on lined paper. haben sein werden ich habe bin werde du hast bist wirst er/sie/es hat ist wird wir sind ihr habt seid werdet Sie sie What do these mean?
